Yorkie x Shih-tzu??

Anyone have a Yorkie x Shih-Tzu mix?

The breeder is calling them Yorkie-shus not Shorkies, so I'm assuming the Mom is a Yorkie & Dad is a Shih-tzu, but I haven't asked yet.

I have a chance to get a cute little boy for $600 Canadian. He's 3 months tomorrow.

I'm just wondering what the qualities of your Yorkie x Shih-tzu mixes are?

Sounds like an unplanned breeding to me....I don't think I could guess--could be all the worst qualities of the 2 breeds.

I don't have that particular cross, but I have a yorkie and a shihpoo. My shih tzu mix is very sweet! I would check the breeder out very closley. Find out if the parents are full bred. I hear now they are breeding the mixes. For example the mommy is a shih poo breeding to a shih poo. I'd just recommend you do a lot of research first. That baby is VERY cute!!! Good Luck to ya!!!

In my area you could almost by a pure breed for that amount, maybe a 100 more... Just depends on if you feel like this one is right for you.

I have a maltese/yorkie cross and like scrapindee said, you really can't predict what a mix will end up like. I think my mix is great - he got the best of both breeds. he is more affectionate/laid back than the yorkie i had before him who was my love for 14 years, but he is still spunky like a terrier! He looks like a maltese, but is colored like a yorkie. I guess what I'm saying is they can take after either parent and you can't be sure which it will be! I know there are some shorkie owners on here!! Best of luck he is a cutie!

I do pet grooming on one. It is so badly undershot I am sure she can't go out in a real heavy rain without almost drowning. She is so solid and STRONG I would say at least 12-15lbs. She won't let me clean her ears she fights and tries to bite. Her coat is neither shih Tzu nor a very good Yorkie coat, it is very thin. Colour is much like the YOrkie pattern. She has the bowed front legs of the Shih Tzu. Ears are huge and flopped.
I don't know if this is what you have in mind and a yorkie/shih tzu mix can look like either breed and everything in between including what this one looks like.
Always remember puppies are cute, but in a mixed breed they can grow up to look like almost anything.

Ah.... I was gonna say you would have the best of "both worlds". I have both breeds and if you combine them, my opinion would be a really nice dog. Let us know if you get him.

It is not within the Shih Tzu breed standard to have bowed front legs , I have owned one my whole life and the legs are straight . Visible teeth are also not within the Tzu standard . My Shih Tzu Henry is the sweetest dog in the UNIVERSE , if your pup has a Shih Tzu temperament you will be very lucky . That pup is darling , I find pure bred dog snobs a BORE ( JMO ). Sarah

Do your research, make sure it's what you really want, compare prices to a pure breed, and then follow your heart. He sure is cute.

I never said they were visible, they aren't until you open the mouth. This is one of the problems in crosses, many are very undershot or overshot or wry mouth because you are combining two different jaw types when mixing breeds.
Breed Standard on the bite from the AKC website statee: Bite - Undershot. Jaw is broad and wide. A missing tooth or slightly misaligned teeth should not be too severely penalized. Teeth and tongue should not show when mouth is closed. Fault: Overshot bite.
So breed standard for the Shih Tzu is an undershot bite, combine with a different breed and it goes out of proportion. Breed standard also says front legs should be straight but I have yet to see it in a cross breed or poorly bred shih tzu ie byb breeder.
As a professional mobile dog groomer of 16 years, I know what I see out there in mixed breeds, yes some are sweet many are not so sweet, coats are mixtures of coat types of those breeds that they are made up from, buyer is not knowing what size it will really get to and often are surprised.
In my years of pet grooming I have been bitten a couple of times, dogs were either Lhasa's or Shih Tzu's or crosses of those breeds.Having said that, I am not saying all are like that as I have and had clients that were not problem, wonderful to groom. BUt you can't argue experience and that has been mine over many years. I also have a friend that only has had her grooming shop for 4 years now and she has found this experience to be the same, Shih Tzu's and their crosses can be much more difficult and can be more tending to bite but Lhasa's are still the worst in general.
Again yes there are exceptions.
