| I think, from what I've found, that it means a Yorkie with petite features (shorter muzzle, small nose, etc). I do notice that some with the "babydoll" face have larger eyes. |

| The flatter face -- short muzzle -- think of baby dolls -- their features are flatter -- not like Barbie. Some don't like the terms baby doll face, teddy bear face, etc -- but I think it helps describe the features. I like the short muzzles too.

| I would agree that "babydoll" means a smaller face...bigger eyes, shorter nose (a button nose) Sammie on the left is not really baby doll since his eyes are smaller than his nose....Rio is more baby doll because of her small features and big round eyes |

| Inbreeding Problems With Small Genetic Pools Yes breeding smaller and smaller is creating an unhealthy dog. To deal with this in Britain we are now utilising our larger genetic pool to stop the problems associated with extreme miniturisation and the cruelty that brings. This is in line with the new Animal Welfare Act just come in to force. Show people and judges are also realising extreme miniturisation is the death knell of a breed. Basically they become too small to be bred successfully. For anyone of the small ones that survive numerous die at or near birth. This is not a healthy situation for a breed. Welcome to The British Yorkshire Terrier Society which looks after the interests of the total population of the Yorkshire Terriers in Great Britain. Not only do we consider the show dog but the whole population of Yorkshire Terriers be they pets, PAT dogs, Hearing dogs, or agility dogs. We are official consultees to DEFRA The Department of The Environment Food and Rural Affairs. We have just campaigned strongly for the abolition of the mutilated tail that is the docked tail. Pre 1920's the Yorkshire Terrier was not docked and did not suffer extreme miniturisation. We intend to stop the cruelty done to Yorkshire Terriers by the process of miniturisation. We want a dog which does not suffer easy breaks of the bone, breathing difficulties caused by too short a nose, jaw problems by breeders pandering to human fashion, a fashion which is detrimental to a dog being able to function naturally, we are against miniturisation which brings about tear duct problems and slipped patellas. If people want a dog as a fashion accessory find a stuffed toy if you want a dog then let that animal behave like a dog. We know what people in Britain want - a healthy natural looking Yorkshire Terrier. Yorkshire Terriers should not be below 7lbs and can be upto 23lbs. They still look like a small dog of suitable temperament to be a successful family pet. Talk of teacups and Babydoll faces is the thing of the past. It will take time but for heavens sake think about what you are doing to those dogs in your own countries. |

| Deborah, as you have some valid points, I must disagree with you about a few things.... I agree that breeding yorkies too small that they suffer poor health conditions is cruel, but I know many small(er) yorkies that are in perfect health conditions. Yorkies are known to be smaller breeds and to say they must NOT be under 7 pounds is to say Asians should not have small bone structure. I am Asian and that is in our genetic history. Having a yorkie under 7 pounds is not cruel. Having a Dachshund who's mid body is very long, is not cruel. It's the nature of their breed and sometimes, just like different nationalities in humans, you have to work around it. When Dachshunds get older and they have back problems, you must attend to it. When Yorkies get older and they have dental problems, you have to attend to it. When bulldogs get infections between their wrinkles, you have to clean it out. As some yorkies are under 7 pounds and some are over 7 pounds, it is wrong to say we are cruel in raising small yorkies as many of us have VERY healthy small ones and probably take care of them better than owners of other breeds. As far as docking the tails, my parents had an awful experience with the opposite. They have a yorkie/maltese mix and he is 10 pounds. When he was just over a year old, an infection occured on the tip of his tail (not docked). The vet told my parents that the weight and size of his tail was not porportionate with his body. Therefore, every time he would wag his tail, the heavy weight and lenth of it caused poor blood circulation. He had to get his tail docked and it took months of unable to walk for their dog to get back to normal. Now, with his docked tail, he is happy and healthy. The docking of the tail can be controversial yet I don't believe it's cruel. It is done when they are very young in age. Some may say parents who pierce their daughters ears when they are born may be cruel but it's a matter of choice and making sure it's done properly. |

| I have been told that Lola has a "babydoll face." Her puppy pic is in her avatar. She looks a little different now, but still has all of the tiny features.
