| Help!! I have been reading all of your wonderful advice for a couple weeks now, anticipating the arrival of my first yorkie He will be 12 weeks on the 13th and I have been making plans with the breeder to pick him up on the 10th. She just wrote me wondering if I could wait till the end of February to pick him up because he is not eating very well on his own. Does this sound right? at what age do they start to ween them from thier mothers? I feel she is only doing what is right for the puppy, it is just soooo hard to wait and all the plans we have made to pick him up. I even have a week off vacation and we are driving 600 miles. Please help, I don't know what to do, is this something that seems normal. He weighed 1.6 at his vet check at 9 weeks and she said he was healthy. |

| Hmmm.....Well, if he's still that tiny and he's not eating enough on his own, then she's doing the right thing. Is there any way to change your vacation? Since he's not being shipped, and you'll be right there with him in the car, I think that with the proper instruction on his feeding he'd be absolutely fine. I would just get the feeding info from her and keep the plans the same if it was me. As long as you are aware of the signs of hypoglycemia and how to prevent and treat it, then she should trust that you will care for him properly. Talk to her about it some more and let her know that you are knowledgeable about these things and she may change her mind Good luck and please keep us posted.

| First, welcome to Yorkietalk! Here is my opinion. You have the rest of his life to spend with him. If the breeder is concerned that he's not ready to go, WAIT. Too many stories of heartbreak on this forum and why risk his health if you don't need to??? Hopefully you can change your vacation etc...but if it were me, I'd wait.

| Thanks for the advice, I'm going to speak to the breader and play it by ear. You said exactly what my husband said about having him for the the rest of his life (hopefully 14 or more years) and a couple of weeks won't hurt. I read on another thread about a puppy with a poor appitite, and giving him nutrical to boost it. Does that sound like something I could ask my breeder to try? I'm sure she knows better than I but, it's worth a try if it helps the little guy. |

| No advice but my opinion only. I could only wish that my puppymill/breeder would have done that with my Bijou. Instead all she saw was dollar signs and an ignorant new owner to scam. The breeder does sound like she cares and wants the best/healthy puppy to leave her premises. If she is a good breeder she has been watching these pups since the day they were born. She has picked up on this little boy not eating well. She wants to make sure everything is fine as moving to a new home can be stressful enough. So, IMO, leave him at the only home he has ever known, his fur Mommy and human Mommy. Once he is ready to go I am sure the wait will be worth it. |

| I have told my breeder that I would wait for her okay to pick up Leo, asking if she could send an updated picture to get me through the next few weeks. I feel very blessed to have found her as the breeder of my first Yorkie experience! If any of you are close to Colorado Springs and wanting a new yorkie look into karensyorkies.com you will not be disapointed. Thanks again, you are all so knowledgeable and I have learned so much from this forum. I will keep you posted. |
