| new arrival Hi out there- we just put a deposit down on a beautiful baby girl pup...will get her in about 4 weeks. We might name her Frida, maybe Joy, maybe Sophie...anyway, my question is this...if you could suggest the top ten things i will need for this new baby. We will crate train, we do have two young cats...how should I bring our little cutie home...will they give me a box like my cats? This is all pretty new to us as the cats were pretty easy. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I want to be prepared before she comes home to us. bye- jamie |

| Hi Jamie. Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby. I'd get: 1. a puppy sized bed. I got one for Stewie that had a pillow attached to the bed. I got it at Petco. The pillow was like his "mama" when he slept in it. 2. a good quality trainer treat to aid in potty training (which is a nightmare, in my experience, sorry to scare you. LOL) 3. a blankie that they can call their own. Stewie sleeps with me and sleeps on top of his blanket. 4. a collar with ID tags 5. a furry toy that is her size. Stewie used to cuddle with his grizzly bear from Build a Bear, but now he wrestles with it. 6. a carrier for vet visits or car rides. One hard carrier for the car will help ensure their security in the event that you have to swerve or get in an accident. 7. food/water bowl for your home and I also have a cheap plastic double bowl to take with me for travel 8. a million rolls of paper towels for the million accidents the puppy is going to inevitably have. 9. a small bag of the food the breeder had her on/ a bag of food that you plan to switch to so you can mix them and do it gradually so you don't upset her tummy. 10. a cute outfit for her to wear when people come visit (optional of course) haha. P.S. I like the name Joy. Good luck and let us know if we can help!

| I would also make sure you have nutrical on hand in case of hypoglycemia and that you get an"emergency syringe feeding kit" from your breeder or make one yourself. This kit should contain a small syringe(3 cc size), baby dry rice cereal, karo syrup, baby food (chicken) in a jar, pedialyte (unflavored), and corn starch. Hopefully, you will not need it but if you do, you will be so thankful! Baby yorkies cannot miss a meal. If they do they can fade very quickly and get low blood sugar which can quickly lead to convulsions and even death. Sometimes there is not time to get to the vet. You would mix 2 tsp of the rice cereal with 1 tsp of the constrach or karo syrup and 2 tsp of the chicken baby food and add pedialute until you get the consistency of a soft baby food which is still fairly liquid and is easy to suck up into the syringe. The baby will need 3 to 5 syringe fulls three or four times a day until it starts eating on it's own again. You will also give pedialyte by syringe if the puppy is not drinking to prevent dehydration. This is especially important for tinies (little yorkies who maure to les than 4 lbs as an adult.) This is of less a concern if you have an older or bigger puppy. I don't mean to scare you. This will probably not happen to you but you sound like you want to be prepared so I would have wanted this when I got my first puppy. I also like to have the puppy milk they sell in the pet stores for use when a puppy's mother won't feed them. Most really like it and I have had mine eat that when they would nothing else and it really pus the weight on. Generally, they say that once a puppy is weaned you shouldn't give it "milk" becuase it's digestive system changes and it cannnot handle it well, but I think untila pup is 16 weeks a little of this milk is okay to encourge an appetite. JMHO! |

| Before you pick up your baby write a list of questions with all of your concerns and discuss these in depth with the breeder. I am assuming your baby is coming from someone in your area and you have had a chance to visit and acquaint yourself with your new youngun. Take a blanket or shirt or bed( I actually make a bed for each pup that leaves my home and all of my dogs crawl around and leave their scent on it) so your baby will have familiar smells when you first bring it home. I do not like plastic carriers-I like to see my babies all the time so I buy a wire crate and cover a portion of it to make a den. Buy NutriStat or NutriCal and bottled water and take it and the crate with you when you pick up your puppy. Your breeder will probably be the best source for info about all of the other extras and preps you should make. One of the most important things you can ever do for a new baby is MAKE A VET APPT BEFORE YOU EVEN BRING THE BABY INTO YOUR HOME. You can always cancel it if you don't get the baby but they are hard to make on a moment's notice. Bring the vet records for your baby to your new vet..a stool spec is good but not absolutely necessary. I can guarantee you that you will not be objective after several days of having the new baby in your arms-- so do it ASAP. Don't buy a collar-get a harness that will fit your baby. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PUPPY OUT SHOPPING AND ALLOW STRANGERS TO TOUCH HER TIL YOU ARE SURE SHE HAS HAD ALL OF HER VACCINES!!! Never let her down on the floor at pet stores, especially those that have vets attached. Do not hesitate to tell someone "NO You may not pet her" and put your hand between her and the person. She is a baby-your baby- so treat her as such. Protect her!!!!!!!! |
