Administrator | Yorkie: Starting Training Reward. Reward. Reward. Be sure to vocally praise your Yorkie when they do something good. It's best to start off training with only one commander. That way your Yorkie will grow accustomed to one voice, and that will bring less confusion. When your Yorkie comes when he is called, praise him. You may want to give him a little treat, some kind of food will work. Once he relates the treat to being obedient, he will learn. Also, be patient. Training is not a one-time thing. You will need to put aside perhaps 30 minutes or an hour each day for a few weeks to teach your Yorkie. When your Yorkie does something bad, do scold him. Never hit your Yorkie, a loud clap of your hands, or make a loud noise (like using the cardboard part of a paper towel roll) will be sufficient. You can also "quarantine" your Yorkie or leave him alone in the bathroom, or put him in a high area (make sure he won't jump). Don't quarantine him for too long, perhaps 10 or 15 minutes. http://www.yorkietalk.com/index.php?...rting_training Last edited by admin; 06-30-2008 at 07:59 AM. Reason: clarified training |

| My Roxy I am new here and have a question. My roxy is 13 weeks old and loves to bite my daughter and myself in a playful way. She means no harm she is just teething. How do i Stop her from bitting us? I've tried redirecting her to a toy but it doesn't seem to work. Also I have another question. I didn't get her from a breeder. i got her from a friend who's female Silky accidently mated with the mother in laws male yorkie. This doen't make my roxy a purebred right? Also on more thing. The person I got her from never docked her tail or her ears. Is it to late do do it now or does it really make a difference?

You can shave the the hair off her ears and maybe they will stand up on their own. Do a search to see how to properly do this. There are lots of Yorkies here with ears down and full tails and they are adorable! As long as she's healthy, that's the what's really important. I'm assuming she's not full Yorkie if the Mother is a Silky Terrier, but I'm sure she really looks like a Yorkie, since Silkies resembles Yorkies a lot. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I hate to argue with admin, but I've got to say I'm a little bothered by some of the advice you have given. "You do not need to hit your Yorkie, but a stern tap of your hand, or something such as the cardboard part of a paper towel roll will be sufficient" It is not clear whether you mean hitting the Yorkie with the cardboard or hitting your hand with the cardboard, the noise from this should be enough to stop the behavior. You should never hit your Yorkie with the cardboard part of a paper towel roll, even if this won't hurt them, it will teach them that your hands, are threatening, and this is not good. Your advice on crating as punishment is also questionable. "You can also "quarantine" your Yorkie and put him in a crate, leave him alone in the bathroom, or put him in a high area (make sure he won't jump). Don't quarantine him for too long, perhaps 10 or 15 minutes." Most experts believe that the crate should never be used for punishment, and should be thought as a safe haven. The second part where you suggest the bathroom is fine, as long as that's not a place that you want to happily keep him at other time. For biting, a firm no with a loud nose usually does the trick, and giving the dog something to chew on, not just a toy, but a chew toy. Remember they are teething at this time and very uncomfortable
