| Sick Dog: switched food. WOAH someone stinks! HELP! I posted awhile ago about Oliver possibly having food allergies due to rash on neck and continual trips to the vet to get them cleared up. So I switched from Nutro lamb and rice to Nateral (nature's?) Balance Duck and potato due to someone's suggestion. He made the week transition from old food to new food without any bowel problems whatsoever. He has been on just his new food now for two days and WOAH! He visits his litter box several times a day to go #2- Not runny and not small (to say the least) He has gone 5 times already today (I free feed him his 1 cup of food beginning in the AM and he will eat about half and finish that last of it but this time at night) Is this bad? good? anyone? My boyfriend is worried he isn't absorbing the nutriants because it is seeming to "go right through him" Sorry for the length, but I'm stumped!!

| If he's done fine on the food for several days befor ethis incident he may have caught a bug. Before he becomes dehydrated you might want to try: Pepto bismal 1 tsp. per 5 lbs. every 6 hrs., Kaopectate 1 ml per pound 2 -4 times a day, or Immodium 1-2 ml per 4 lbs. 2-3 times daily. Hope this helps!

| When I switched over Sissy's food she pooped alot the first week or so and then it went back to her normal pattern of morning and night. As long as it's not runny, I wouldn't worry too much. It is also possible you might be feeding too much. The Natural Balance has so many nutrients in it that you are only supposed to feed 1/2 cup daily for a pup under 10 lbs.

| I feed ths same thing to all 3 of my dogs, my yorkie Lily is 5 1/2 months and she gets it twice a day, morning and about 5pm for dinner. She is only 2.11lbs. so she only eats about 1/4 cup each time, sometimes not all of that. She poos twice a day. i agree that when you first switch them they can poo more thatn usual. As long as it isn't runny and he seems to feel ok give him a chance to get use to the food. Or to be safe take him to the vet and see what they say.

| Nyx is also on potato and duck not due to any allergies it's just the one that my local petco always has in stock. When she first started on it she pooped 5 times a day too, she now poos 2 maybe 3. It's ok.

| I was told that when I decide to switch food, start by changing brands, not ingredients. For example, right now we use Nutro Lamb and Rice, and when we switch, we're hoping to switch to BLUE lamb and brown rice. I was told this was the best way for my dog to change foods? I don't know by experience yet though. Good luck!

| Thanks everyone! HOpefully today won't be so bad! haha I feel bad for the BF because the litter box is in HIS bathroom! hahahaha Well we'll see how it goes today. LuvMySissy: i double checked the bag and it said 2/3- 1 cup for pups under 10 pounds and Oliver is 8, so I assumed he should probably be getting the higher amount? I'm a little worried, he always seems hungry by the end of the night, sitting at his food dish and licking it... should I give in and toss him some kibble?? (what I have been doing) or not? thanks everyone!!!!!!!

No Longer a Member | It is a known fact if they poop alot after they eat then they aren't absorbing what they need. Find a dog food where it is all totaly absorbed. Lots talk about this dogfood and that. It can be the best dogfood in the world but if they poop it out its not worth crap. Each dog is different , find whats right for your own dog. My yorkies get dry dogfood out all the time but I feed them raw chicken in between sometimes, they love it , the raw bones cleans their teeth and honestly I have not had any of my yorkies sick at all, they are healthy as horses. Well maybe a little too fat LOL They get cooked eggs for breakfast, dry dogfood all the time, and ummmmmmmm cheese, sour cream(they love that) cesar pack once a day. OMG are mine spoiled or what? But mine never poop much and never have a diarrhea. |
