| Is this too small? Diesel eats very well but yet I can still feel his backbone with ease. You can't see his ribs but if you lay your hand on his back and press down a bit you can feel them. He acts just like he always has there isn't a change there. He has a lot of muscle tone in his legs but yet I still feel he is too little. I am trying to fatten him up as much as possible without over doing it. 3 months ago at the vets office he was 4.5 pounds. Any suggestions on what to feed him? Or even if this is ok with some Yorkies. His mom wasn't very big and his dad was small too. He is my first Yorkie so I tend to spaz just a little. Michelle |

| Put your hand on his side very lightly. If you can feel his ribs easily without pressing he may be too thin. However he sounds fine, especially if he is eating well and energetic. Make sure his kibble is a good one! Then he will be getting all he needs.

| Sadly the only dry dogfood I can get him to eat is the Puppy Pedigree dogfood. I ahve been through several other brands. Merricks(different flavors)Nutro, Science diet,Chicken soup soft puppy food... there are a few others. I am not sure what to do. Any food suggestions for picky eaters?? Michelle |

| If the mother and father are small , there is a big chance that the pup will stay small . |

| We're new at this - we brought Bailey home just 4 weeks ago. She will be 12 weeks old on Friday, and has already proven to be a little bit picky about her food. She's not really fond of dry food, but I mix about a teaspooon of soft food (we've been using Cesar for puppies) with her real food. Stir it together well and she eats all of the dry food. That's usually just her breakfast. Her other meals are dry food only. She picks at them, but eventually gets hungry enough to eat the dry food. |

| Yeah i wanted to try and get him off of the Pedigree. I am still trying different things. He is just so darn picky. I guess I am to blame for some of that too.I baby him like crazy. His dad was 4.5 and his mom was 5.5 but at the time she was carrying 2 babies. So I don't think he will get huge but I would like to see him reach the 5 pound mark if not 5.5. Maybe some better food will help out. Thanks for the help Michelle |

| We recently adopted a dog that was way too thin....2 lbs at nine months! I've got her fattened up a bit, and even the vet sd. she "wasn't TOO skinny", but she just still seems too too fragile to us, so I know where you're coming from. These are my first yorkies, too! My younger puppy is a little tub of lard , and we're used to how "sturdy" she feels. The entire family prefers that, and it does just seem more "healthy". I mean, I get that my older dog is "fine-boned"....but shouldn't those bones have some PADDING on them?! But I've been wondering if it is comman for yorkies to feel so "bony" (like chis), and it's just not as visually obvious under all that hair. At anyrate, I've had a similar "I need to fatten up my doggie" thread up in the health/diet forum. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42531 Lots of good advice and ideas there, although the primary thought seems to be feeding a quality food. But what if you can't get the dog to EAT any of it?! SIGH!!! The only thing I've found that she loves is (people!) chicken babyfood, so I mix that up with her dogfood to try to get her to eat. It's helped!

| if you mix a tablespoon of cottage cheese into his dry dog food, he's bound to eat it. plus it'll help put some weight on him. |

| Thanks for the thread link I will go read it. As for the cottage cheese.. well I did that when he was little and he ate the cottage cheese and left the rest. LOL I would watch him and he would sit there and lick it all up and leave the rest. It can't hurt to try it again tho. Plus I need to go on a diet so it is a good reason to buy some., LOL Michelle |
