| I want a yorkie! Hey everyone, my names Morgan and I'm new to these forums. I've been wanting a yorkie forever, and my boyfriend is in the process of purchasing one for me. I'm used to owning bigger dogs, mainly boxers. I've been doing research on yorkies, but does anyone have any advice on main things I need to know about them, what I should expect out of my yorkie, etc. Also, how are they with other dogs? Another thing I read is that they don't like to be alone for hours at a time, which most dogs dont. But this article said if you work all day (8hrs) a yorkie isnt good. Whats your guys' opinions on this? |

| I have a full time job and who says you cannot have a dog or a yorkie just because you are not there to attend to them 24/7. It is quality time spent that is important so that should not stop you from getting one. Yorkies are very, very expensive and once you own one you tend to pamper them way too much. They are however so adorably cute that your heart will melt whether or not they are well behaved or otherwise . There is just something special about them that we all go crazy for and we tend to treat them like our babies. I love that they are small enough to carry around and they are NON-shedders if that is high on your list (it sure is on mine). Can't wait to see pictures of your baby. I myself just brought home my baby girl Annika and already she is adapting well to her new surroundings . . . between her and my Tiger, I am always in 7th heaven (thanks to a very supportive husband). Welcome to YT |

I will definitly be spoiling my yorkie! And since I don't have any children and dont plan on having any until I'm married which will be a few years from now, this yorkie will be like my kid! lol Shedding really isn't an issue to me, but its always a plus if they dont shed as much. Thanks for your help!

| i've experienced two yorkies and these are the general things i've picked up about the breed: A) they can be very hyper/hard to calm down, but good for long walks. B) they think they are bigger than they are which can get them in trouble with other dogs who really are bigger. C) they are HELL to potty train (compared to other breeds.) other than that and maybe a few other things i forgot, it's really up to the individual dog. they have a lot of personality and much of that is influenced by how they were bred and raised up to the point that you take them home. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali is my 4th Yorkie so you can see I am partial to them. They are sweet but strong willed which can make them a little bit harder to train. WIth all of my other 4 dogs I worked full time and had no problems, training was a little harder but not bad. With Cali I am not working and training her was a breeze but she was sotiny and sick that I don't think she would have made it if I hadn't been here around the clock to observe her and rush her to the vets. So I wouldn't advise getting a real tiny one unless you have someone who can be with the puppy some of the day and unless youa re prepared for the possible expense of vet bills. Cali is over 5,000.00 in vet bills and not yeta year old. Be very careful where you get one from. It can make the diffrence between heartbreak and joy. But they are so worth it!

As for potty training, I'm thinking of getting one of those pads that you put inside the house, but I also want it to be trained to go outside. Any advice for that? W/ past dogs, we just trained them outside.

| I have two yorkie babies right now, not related. One is very hyper and does not like to sit still unless she is asleep, the other is very lovey and cuddly and loves to be held. When choosing one ask the breeder about their dispositions and choose one that matches your life style. Think of a yorkie puppy as a baby, not a dog. Some of them will play till exhausted and then fall asleep and forget to eat, so you must make sure they eat. They do not like to be alone, but as others have said, a lot of yorkie parents work and the dogs adjust. Good Luck on your search. I know you will be hooked forever once you have one. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali is the first puppy I have had out of 5 before that I crate trained and wee wee pad trained. It worked so well and quick. I put her in a dog playpen and she had her bed at one end and her pad on the other and never messed in her bed always used the pads and had very, very few acidents. She still goes in the playpen to use her pad and when I'm not home to stay safe.

Because we feel that Hobbs is lonely, we have decided to get him a playmate to keep him company during the day. We are getting a little female named Hootie in July, which is actually Hobbs' sister from a subsequent litter. I have often heard that if you are gone all day at work that it really helps to have more than one yorkie (or at least that is what I have convinced my husband of ). GOOD LUCK with your new little one! They are the best little companions. I would really watch him/her around your big dogs, though. At least until they get really used to each other.

| Hi Morgan my name is Morgan too And believe it or not we have a boxer as well I love Yorkies they are an amazing breed, but like with all puppies and dogs it's like having a baby. This is a great place to come for advice. Georgie is small 3 1/2lbs., and I am super paranoid with him. I created a monster with Georgie (a very handsome monster I might add) but I work from home and he is super attached to me, but I know plenty of people on here work 8 hours a day. I think that Yorkies are awesome and now I want a house full

How do your boxer and yorkie get along? My boxer likes other animals (thought my sisters guinea pig was HIS baby) but not too fond of people (we almost had to put him down in fear of him attacking). The boxer is at my parents, so it's not like they will be together everyday, but I would like them to be able to be friends.

| At first, my Jax hated to be alone and would follow me everywhere. Maybe it is because he is a Yorkie, but I also think it is because I am home for the summer and not working (I'm a teacher). But we also have two rottie/shepard mixes and now he has bonded with them. So when he is alone now he doesn't freak out as much. I think that if you just put the puppy into a routine when you first get him, he won't know any different. If you are at work for 8 hours a day, just get him used to that routine. |
