| Brushing Teeth Challenge: does your Yorkie do this? When Max and Teddy pant hard on a hot day, they open their mouths so wide that I can see all of their teeth and gums. But......when it comes to brushing their teeth, they act like they cannot open their mouths wider than a tiny bit. Does your Yorkie do the same?

| Haha, yes!! I just wanted to add....Daisy never liked to get her teeth brushed but one day I went to brush them she acted like a maniac trying to keep me out of her mouth. She violently turned her head from side to side and pushed my hands away with more force that I thought she was capable of. I mentioned it to the vet and she checked Daisy's teeth and found the last molar was loose. She got a dental cleaning and had the tooth pulled. Prior to this she was acting strange and we thought she was getting dimentia. After the tooth was pulled she went back to her old self. So we think it must have been hurting her and she couldn't tell us. She was eating fine so we never really suspected a bad tooth. I thought I would mention it in case anyone else experiences this. I sure wish these little ones could tell us what hurts. I gotta hand it to the vets who sometimes have to be detectives to find out what's wrong and fix our little ones. And how she got Daisy to let her look in her mouth is beyond me!

| Max and Teddy act like they are willing to brush, but they pretend they can't open their mouths.

| Thanks Kristin, we were so relieved it was only a bad tooth. We were so worried about her.

| I can put any barrette, top knot, outfit, tutu on this baby girl. She is so patient with my children. she has no problems at the vet or groomer. but brushing her teeth?? OMG. she clamps her mouth and is wild when I try to do it. During her spay, she had retained baby teeth removed and they brushed for me. But this is going to be an ongoing issue ugh! any tips?? |

Try wrapping a little wet gauze around your finger with the toothpaste and massage her teeth and gums with that. She may accept the gauze more readily than the brush. Once she grows accustomed to that, she may be more willing to use the toothbrush.

| Piper is capable of carrying big ol' milkbones--treats for neighbor's Akitas--all over the backyard looking for suitable (i.e. muddy enough) place to bury, but when I attempt to brush her little pearly whites, her mouth is clamped closed like a vice grip. Also, Piper has the uncanny ability of moving her in such a fashion that I can't even get a grip on her cunning little melon--talk about bob and weave!!! However, having just returned from vet, only one front canine has any tarter and my groomer is now offering dental brushing....Good luck to my wonderful grooming gals in that little venture!!! |

| Yeah, that is a service that I am going to be happy to pay for quite often. I pity the fool who puts their tender fingers anywhere in the area code of Bella's mouth!

| Mine fight like crazy to keep that mouth shut! I usually end up with toothpaste all over their faces by the time we are finished. Those boys are smarter than you think! Haha. Keep mouth closed mom can't brush so easily.
