| Noni's mom Hi everyone. I'm Mandy. Noni is our 3 week old YT. Haven't brought him home yet obviously. Here is a little background on me. Don't laugh. ;-) 1) always have had large breed dogs. Bijou (RIP 2010) was our last rescue. He was a retriever/cocker spaniel mix. Other breeds were healers and labs... & Tucker our foster Bassador. After Bijou passed away, we spent a couple years mourning, and a couple years trying to decide what breed we should get as the kids are mostly out of the home now, and all company will be kept with boring, lonely me. (Poor dog) I also work full time so I was already worried about this little tiny guy. 2) always have had rescues that were mostly trained and 6 months old or older. 3) I joined Yt.com and read all about knee issues, liver shunts and tracheal collapse. So now I'm a nervous wreck. I tried to post puppy pics but I'm posting from my phone and the breeders pics are to big. I'm going to meet Noni this weekend and I'll try to capture some while I'm there for posting. Thanks for any advice on pad training, congenital defects and adapting from large breeds to tiny breeds. I'm a fan of pad training because I live in an upstairs apartment, but I know some will tell you to just do outside if that is your ultimate goal. Good luck, and welcome | |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT ! Can't wait to hear more about your soon-to-be new baby. As far as size concerns -- the main thing to know there is that yorkie puppies are more vulnerable due to their small size - ie, being dropped, stepped on etcetera. Some of us will put a bell on their collar when they're puppies -- just remember DO NOT leave them alone w/ a collar on at first as puppies, as they could get it caught in their mouth from fighting the new collar or whatnot. Only put the collar on when home. Also, you never want to use a collar for walking a yorkie -- only a harness. With working full time, you may want to try to come home at lunch time when you can for the first couple months. Otherwise, I'd free feed if you feel safe doing that - bc he'll need to eat about 4x per day at first. As far as congenital issues, be sure to research the issues of the parents and grandparents, that's the most important thing. AND and and -- get insurance RIGHT AWAY on your puppy before any pre-existing conditions occur - AND make sure you have it on the puppy's medical records that the knees were checked and don't have LP (luxating patella). That way, should it develop later, the surgery would be covered by insurance. As far as what to have for the pup, I'd start here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pup...w-parents.html My 3 kiddos are pad trained, but I sure wish I would've done outside pee training only. Too late now...

| Thanks Ann (?) I have been scouring the adds trying to find all the stuff I need for a puppy and completely forgot about a harness. Also appreciate the puppy's for dummies link. Definitely going to print that out and give a copy to everyone at home as required reading. |

| If you are getting a health guarantee from the breeder be sure to have the pup vetted as soon as you get it to determine any health issues. Also some pet insurances cover congenital/hereditary disorders and some don't so you might want to check on that. Good luck! We will be wanting pictures of course!
