| No response to my question in the Health and Diet Thread I posted a question about Milo not eating anything but chicken stix in the Health and Diet forum but no one responded, so I figured I would try my luck here, Yes, Milo is refusing all his food-kibble, wet, raw, all except chicken sticks, which he loves. I dunno, maybe I'm feeding him too early in the day, but I am worried about hypoglycemia so I start breakfast about 7:30/8:00. Should I worry about him only eating chicken six? Is it too much protein? He will be 16 weeks on Valentines Day and is 1 lb 12 oz. Any suggestions, words of wisdom, advice???? Thanks, Shellie Last edited by broodizt; 02-08-2014 at 08:39 AM. |

| What do you mean by chicken sticks? Is this something you are making at home or is this a commercial product? The primary concern is that straight chicken is not a balanced diet. Dogs need a rather precise balance of nutrients or they are at risk for severe health issues, starting with kidney and liver.

You could home cook, but that seems like a lot of work and balanced nutrition is SO important for these little guys.... personally, I wouldn't risk it especially at such a young age. That's just my OPINION...... | |

| Maybe you could wet his food down with organic unsalted chicken broth and see if he'll eat it that way or try breaking some of the chicken stick up and mixing them into his food and making a mush so he can't pick them out.

| Hi there, Thank you so much for your suggestions. Unfortunately after soaking Swansons 30% less sodium chicken broth and smooching the chicken sticks up in the rest of his food, he just stares at it blankly, blinks and goes back to sleep. I leave it there for a half hour and then I pick it up. Gotta find a food he will eat consistently. |

You are going to have to entice him to eat a balanced food. You can add enticements on top of the food, but they shouldn't exceed 15 - 20% of total daily intake. I had to hand feed Max his first year and play games with him. I had to get him excited to eat. He performed tricks and I gave him kibble as rewards like they were gold nuggets. I had to praise him for eating. When you offer food, be sure to be really excited about it. If you are anxious about whether he will eat, and if you start offering alternatives, he will think something is wrong with the food you are offering. I know you have the added concern of hypoglycemia, especially because he is so small. But work at encouraging him to eat what he should be eating.

You can make your own broth @ home w/beef or chicken bones...no added spices or salt or anything, just the bones & water.

| LOL I might get beat up for this, but here goes: Drop the "Natural" pet food requirement.... I think it's more important that he eats a dog kibble he likes... CERTAINLY, look at the ingredients, check the ratings, make sure it's high up there in nutrition and quality... but... "Natural"..and tasty.. might not be found as easily....or at all.. in your dog's opinion.. LOL I'll try to find that link....for ya... |

| Same here. A simple solution really - just bring in some competition (lol). No, seriously, P-Nut was very finicky for a long time, but putting a little boiled chicken in with his kibble solved that problem. He'd do ANYthing for chicken! I also use his kibble as training treats throughout the day. He's a good eater now, no chicken needed to entice him anymore. |

| I wish dog food companies would make little trial packs you could by for this very purpose. to find out if your dog will like it and eat it. You go through an awful lot of money buying even the smallest bags just to have them not eat it. then on to the next expensive bag, hoping the same thing wont happen with that. By the time you find the right one for time, you could end up with several opened bags of expensive food they wont eat and your bank account empty. If there are any reps of dog food companies sneaking in the mist out there reading this....please consider this suggestion. Dog lovers will love you. "TRAIL PACKS" |
