| Strange little bath-loving puppy...kind of need help. I have discovered that Gypsy likes her bathtime...a lot. We bought a Rubbermaid container and designated it as her bathtub, and she splashes, bats a ball around the surface of the water, pokes around, etc, while being bathed. When she's being blow-dried she likes the scratches we do to separate her hair as she's drying and she'll get all excited. The problem with this is that after her bath and blow-dry...when we put her on the floor to play, she chucks an absolute fit and will tear off in the direction of the guest room (where we put her tub). She'll whimper at the door for a long time, regardless of how much we try to distract her with toys and treats. She gives us the "abused" look during this time, like we are beating her or something - it's horrible. Too many baths are not good for a puppy's skin. Even water by itself will remove valuable oils from her if she's wetted down non-stop. So does anyone have ideas on how to break her of this? We have tried treats. We have tried a lot of toys. We've tried scratches and rubs and she wants no part of that, she just wants the tub. Eventually she gives up and she'll play, but it takes a while. By the time she's done chucking a fit we have very little play time with her because she's tuckered out from the bath, but more tuckered out from the following hissy fit. I even tried a spritzer and spritzed her with a tiny bit of water to see if that would suffice - she hated it, it only pissed her off. This is totally new turf to me, as our other two hate bathtime and dry time and are pushing us to hurry up and get them the heck OUT of there in record time, every time. This is not something I would ever expect from a dog. A human toddler - maybe, but not a dog. Ideas welcome |

| Molli loves baths too- she will literally jump in the bathtub and run around and bark until I let her have a bath. Since yours is a Tupperware is there anyway you could let her play with it but without water in it? Or maybe just a little bit of water so she could have fun with out the whole 'bath'? I give Molli a bath about once a week but if she jumps in the tub more (which is often) I usually just let her play in there a while without any water and then distract her with a walk or another fun toy. Good Luck!

| It's great that she loves a bath, but I can see where this is causing a problem. How about a little three foot round baby pool for her to play in? You can put a minimal amount of water, but she can still splash and play with toys, but it's different enough from bath time?

| My little girl likes bath time as well. I think the pool idea is a great idea.

YT 2000 Club Member | I am jealous! My 3 all hate baths and water. I fight Tatiana through her whole bath! Teeka and Max are not as bad. None of them like to play in the water. When we go camping they all stay on a chair or blanket and will not play in the water. I tried taking Tatiana in a chair float and kayak and she didn't like that, either. I am so disappointed as I want them to like the water! I would get a little baby pool and just put enough water for her to wade and play!

| Thank you for the replies and suggestions. I think a kiddie pool sounds like a really good idea! The weather is hot here right now (it's been in the 90s) so I think she would enjoy that. She's only had 2 baths since she's been here but the first one she hated (I think it was because she was new at the time and didn't know or trust us). I don't know what to do once winter comes around, but the kiddie pool idea will be great for at least another couple of months in this 'neck of the woods'. She'll be having a surgery when she's between 7-9 months old and won't be able to do that...so now is great! Thank you muchly, we just might go tonight and get one, I think they have those on display outside of the local hardware store (I just didn't put two and two together). Thank you again I meant to clarify also - I do like the fact that she enjoys her baths...I never meant to insinuate that I didn't. I just don't like the aftermath. lol |
