| Crate vs Pet Pen I am picking up my puppy next weekend (will be 8 weeks old by then)! Trying to do some shopping this weekend and debating if I want to have a metal crate or pet pen for my new boy. Looked at Walmart and didn't seem like they carry a lot of options. I am looking at Midwest iCrate single-door crate 36 x 23 x 25 figured I can put the food and water in also so it will be his little man cave... or get a IRIS 4 panel pet pen (still trying to figure out what to do with the top as a lot of people said the dogs can easily climb out and the top mesh they sold separately is too loose) Anybody with experiences on these product or suggestions how to manage to cover the top of the pet pen will be much appreciated! Thanks! |

| I would get the smallest crate if you plan on crate training. A larger crate may give the dog the idea that they can poop in there.

| This really depends on how much time you have and what kind of potty training you are going to do. Crate training only works if you are going to be there to let the puppy out frequently to go potty. If you cannot do that the puppy will learn to potty in the crate. A young puppy cannot hold it's urine and they have to go frequently. I have seen many here on YT have the white play pen you show. If you are planning on using puppy pads they work very well. | We use the dr foster and smith pet dens because they are a bit taller than most others and the price is reasonable. Abby started out in a smaller plastic crate that was smaller (cat size) for overnite. She was always trying to get in Zivas larger crate so I bought her a new one once she was clean at night. The crate mats from walmart are perfect and last forever ($10) We have the 36"tall 8 panel Isis xpen -we never lifted her out -always used the door and she has never attempted to climb out. I think the 24" might be tempting for her to climb. We use 6 of the panels and it fits a bed, potty pad and food dishes. Best investment I made (Amazon about $70). She is almost 1 1/2 and is just ready to graduate out of the expen . |

| You pup should not be coming home before 12 weeks and any good breeder would know that. If the breeder is not following certain things that are best for the breed I am sure they cut other corners and you could end up with a pup that is sick or could have genetic illness. It bugs me a bit that you came here to learn info about getting a puppy but ignored it and still got a puppy that is to young to leave mom. I hope you do not work and or have someone able to check on this pup hourly because hypoglycemia is a higher risk the younger and smaller they are and if they experience hypoglycemia and no one is there to help they will have seizures and it very well can result in death. I would also prepare your self for potty training issues, biting issues, and socialization issues. Buying from bad breeders keeps them in business and doing a disservice to the breed. The crate you get you need to make sure is not to big or he will use part of it as a bathroom and part of it to sleep in.

| I'm not against crates at all, but I've never been a huge fan. I did it a bit in the beginning with Jackson, but I prefer ex-pens. Especially for a pup so young. You can give them a corner with a potty pad, and then a bed on the other side, etc.

| We have three dogs and keep them used to the "travel type" crates in case we need to evacuate for a hurricane. Also I know that they are safe at night and being such a light sleeper I don't get woken up by wandering dogs. I agree that an expen is a more comfortable choice for a small dog! |

| Why should I crate train my puppy ? What kind works best ? I prefer wire crates. You can leave it open or cover it to make a snuggy den. I think all dogs should be crate trained. Almost all dogs will have to be in a crate at some point in their life. Crating should not cause more stress but , make them feel safer in a stressful situation. Your Yorkie will have to be crated, if they are ill or have to stay at the Vets over night, or have surgery. Dogs can travel on a train, ship, or air planes and stay in many motels, if they can be crated and behave nicely. If a disaster happens, a hurricane, flood, earth quake, mud slide, tornado, or fire and you have to leave your home, a crate is a safe secure place for your dog to be during transport. ALL Animal friendly shelters require dogs to be crated when inside the shelter building. Dogs that bark excessively, whine, act crazy or aggressive etc. will not be allowed to stay. I know this first hand, we had to leave our home here in Fla. because of a hurricane. My dogs behaved beautifully, they were cozy dry, had their own, blankets toys , food and crates. Some people had to rush to Wal-mart and buy a crate before it closed. Their dogs (and Cats) barked, whined, or screamed and tried to get out of the crate. Several people had to put their dogs outside the building, under a tarp, so people could sleep. It was sad and awful for everyone. Please crate train your puppy, you will be glad you did.

| LOVE Exercise Pens. I would like to also add I use a safe room or x pen when I have to leave my dogs for more than a few hours. I make sure their crate, toys, potty pad, food and fresh water are available inside the x-pen or safe room.

| My fur-babies have the master bathroom as their area. I block off the door way with a baby gate. They have room for their beds, water/food bowls, potty pads, and toys. They love "their room" and will go willingly when I leave. I have crates for my dogs also, but do not crate them when I leave (they are in the bathroom). I use the crates mainly for traveling to and from the vet or Petsmart. They have access to the crates most of the time and go in them from time to time. Sometimes I will find both of the pups snuggled in one crate together or chewing a bone. |

| I say this every time I see this kind of thread, just kind of as a warning... I had a pen set up in my bedroom for Luma when we brought her home. Within two weeks of having her she had learned to climb over the pen and escape. If you buy a pen from Petsmart they will let you exchange it, even if you don't have the receipt and it's been out of the box! That was excellent, because we switched it for a crate and she learned how to open that as well. gotta watch the little ones! They can be very sneaky and get into all sorts of trouble...so just be warned ex-pens are not foolproof and you should make sure to "puppyproof" the house.
