| Yuck, Is this normal??? Soooo, I've caught my 4mth old Yorkie eat her own poop a few times! The first time my husband told me he saw her doing that I didn't believe him but now that I've seem her doing it Im grossed put AND worried she can get sick!! At first i thought that it was because she had ran out of food so I make sure her food doesn't go low but she still does it Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to make her stop doing this!!?? |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Yes is normal is a learned behavior, mama eats the puppies poo to clean the whelping box and the area clean. if you give her a few little pieces of pineapple as a snack for a few days , she will stop eating her poop.. hugs, |

| My friend had to use pineapple with her boy (I guess it makes the poo taste gross... as if poo, by nature doesn't already taste gross?) and good thing is they love the pineapple, so it should be an easy fix! Good luck. |

| They all seem to go through it at one time or another. Discourage it, keep the poop picked up immediately after, tell them "no" when you see them approaching it before you get there to pooper-scoop and they soon lose interest.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Pineapple doesn't make poop taste different, what it does is help digest protein and so that the poop has no undigested protein in it making it less appetizing. Pineapple contains bromelain a meat tenderizer. Same reason you can’t use pineapple in gelatin, it breaks down the protein and jello won’t firm up. Not all dogs eat poop for the undigested protein, but this is one reason. Other reasons could be boredom and some dogs, if too harshly scolded for pooping in the wrong place will “hide the evidence”. When a puppy does it, they often outgrow it with no treatment, but it’s a pretty easy fix to add pineapple or switch to an easier to digest food.

| Thanks everyone! Sounds like an easy fix I imagine that pineapple out of the can will work. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, pineapple out of the can should work if undigested protein is the reason he's finding the poop appetizing. I've heard that you give it with the normal food about a tablespoon to start. Also, try and clean poop up as soon as you see it.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | My 2 year old Biewer eats not only his own poop, but also others poop ( and I have 4... I know it's gross sorry!!!) And he ONLY eats fresh poop. I've tried pineapple, I've tried DeTaste, and still nothing seems to work. All I can do is keep a close eye on him (It's very exhausting, especially since he's very quick) Seems like he'll never grow out of it. I'm just hoping it's not harmful to his health.

YT 500 Club Member | Took my pup 5 months of pineapple to finally stop this nasty habit. She's 9 months now, and doing pretty good, but a very picky eater as well. Its so frustrating!!!!!

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Stewie still hasn't grown out of it, and he's NOT picky at all, he'll eat everything. Thank God he's on Hills Z/D diet due to allergies right now, otherwise, he'll be eating everything, and I mean EVERYTHING!!!
