| Help Help Help! Is this normal? We noticed that Jasmin's vagina is puffy this morning. We checked everyday and it does'nt look like this. Is she in heat? She has been licking it. I don't think she slept at all last night due to this. My poor baby. http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/...4/IMAG0380.jpg |

| she is 6 months and just beginning to lose her teeths. So far we found two of them in her playpen. The vet was going to spay her in 3 weeks. I don't even know what to do. I texted the vet but haven't heard back yet. |

| A female does swell and start to have bloody discharge when in heat. Watch her very closely. Her scent will attract male dogs. There is also a dangerous uterine infection that can happen when they are in heat. |

| If she is in heat and starts bleeding, you can get some little diapers at a pet store to help it not get all over your house. Definitely keep her away from any male dogs right now (even if you aren't sure she's in heat..to be safe).

| thanks everyone for your help! DH and I will be going to petsmart today to see what is available. I guess we will have to put off her spay. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I agree with those who say keep her away from male dogs, don't let her outside for a second by herself, the diapers will not hinder a male dog.

| she is always inside. She only goes outside to potty. Although we potty in the front yard with no fence and we have lots of dogs in the neighborhood with two right across the street. Our next door neighbor has a dog as well however we think its a female. DH will probably have to take her outside from now on until she is done. I won't be able to handle the male dogs. |

The heat process at times is not easy on them. Some dog's do fine and other's if can say this can be bitchy. LOL After her heat cycle is over you will need to wait at least 6 - 8 weeks before she can be spayed.

| i am kind of disappointed. Was hoping to get her spayed before her first heat. The vet told us we can wait until 3-4 weeks before making a spay appointment. Oh well. We will have to be extra careful with her until she is done. Just happy to hear that she is only in heat and not something else. I thought it was going to be a medical issue. Thanks again. |

| Since we are on the topic and I am looking to get a female, I once read it is better metaly and health wise to let then have their first heat.. Is that true?

| I have the same question! Is it better to spay before or after the first heat? |

| It is better to wait until the growth plates are closed, so current research says that it's best to wait until after their first heat. This article pertains to all dogs, not just canine athletes. Canine Sports Productions: Early Spay-Neuter Considerations for the Canine Athlete
