Sudden Chicken Allergy...

My Chanel has develop a sudden allergy to chicken after her third litter, very rare said my vet, but now she can't have chicken, her poops go soft and smelly, and she started scratching like she had fleas.. it was horrible, and on top of that she was lactating a litter of 6, vet recomended to change the food, which I did to instinct lamb and like a miracle she got better in a week, so I determined that NO more chicken for her, or anything that contains chicken, she still licks her paws a bit but is only been two months since we discover this, i am retiring her from my breeding program and having her spayed. I am keeping her as a pet for now on, I don't want to rehome her either, my vet and my son who is going to vet school, said that chicken and grains allergies can develop over time and they are very common..I am posting this so people know that your dog can develop a sudden allergy,it has nothing to do with genetics , my Chanel has been eating chicken since I got her at 5 months old in a rotation basis, and now, she is 3 and a half years old she will be 4 April 8, and she has develop this allergy to chicken. I just made her blood work and spay appt.

Yoshi, my Peke has the same allergy issues. It is so nice when you figure out what is making them itchy,,he also can't handle any foods or treats with red dye #40..

Oh my...that's awful...the poor dear!

I know allergies can come on suddenly, once exposure reaches an intolerable level of sensitivity...I cannot handle chemical food additives, certain inhaled chemicals, and such myself...and end up on a nebulizer when I come into contact with intolerable items.

Also, chickens are fed grain/corn, etc., and a lot of grain, especially corn, is not only GMO but heavily sprayed with pesticides as well. Was it organic, free range, natural diet chicken that she became allergic to?

I apologize for the questions, but I'm interested in the subject, was curious, and just thought I'd ask...

she is allergic now to everything Chicken, I feed Natures Variety, which is one of the best dog foods in the market, I mix the kibble in a rotation basis with Raw medallions and can soft foods, well she is allergic to all the above that include chicken, I bought some organic chicken breast I boiled it and mixed it with her puppy kibble because while she was lactating I did not want to just change her food suddenly and she started scratching like a maniac, to the point that I took her to the Emergency vet, at midnight, so by deduction we figure it was the chicken, now she is off anything chicken and she is doing a lot better.. She is being retire from my breeding program and I am having her spay next month..

Oh, poor baby! It can be pretty difficult to avoid chicken. My 'granddaughter' Chi is allergic to meat...all meat. She can eat fish, and has to have a very special dog food. I am so sorry this has happened to her. I wish you all the best.

It's so heartbreaking when they develope allergy's and end up breaking out and itching to death. My Zada, Azrael and Razael didn't start out with allergy's but by the time Zada and Azrael were 7, they were already allergic to poultry, fish, beef and dairy. Razael is allergic to poultry, fish and dairy. I have all three on a Vegan diet.
I'm glad you found what she's allergic to, especially with feeding commercial kibble. That's usually the most difficult food to figure out what's in it that would cause an allergy since the ingredients are very lengthy.

thank you, yes is hard to find stuff without chicken, but is available, so even tho I will be paying more is ok, as long as she can eat it without getting sick..

Carmen yes dogs can have allergies to meat and yes they can occur at any time. I believe rotation of proteins does not help if a dog has allergies (Been there, done that!).

Dogs also can have "intolerances" to different foods. I have a dog that has a long list of problems related to food. While I would agree that organic pastured animals are healthier overall and thus those result in generally better quality meats, I have my views about their addition to commercial dog food and let's just say, I'm a skeptic.

Even so, my dog has been eating organic food from Whole Foods for 12 years and she has many allergies and intolerances to the point where she is on a vegetarian diet. She does well for a while, and then deteriorates. It relates back to bad breeding IMO.
