| Puppy had worms?? I'm pretty sure my puppy has worms. She's 11 weeks old. I noticed her scooting her butt on the carpet about 2 weeks ago, but I thought maybe that her anal glands were bothering her. Then last week we noticed something stuck to her hair near her butt. It looked like dried up brown rice. So I didn't think anything about it until tonight when I noticed there were about 5 pieces of the dried up rice looking thing stuck in her hair by her butt. So that's when I googled it and found out that she probably has tapeworms. She had a vet appointment scheduled for today, but I had to reschedule due to the horrible weather conditions here. So her appointment is in 2 days. I'm pretty worried right now. So I just want to know how much of an emergency this is? Btw she did throw up earlier today. But she's acting like normal. She's still energetic and acting like she always does. |

| does sound like it could be a tapeworm. make sure you take a fecal sample to vet with you. also have the vet check for fleas, that is how your dog gets tapeworm. good luck |

| My puppy had tape worm at 12 weeks, gave him one dose of medicine, it was 1/2 a pill and he is all good now. Call your vet, Have you checked the poop? When they come out they look like white flat grain of rice, after they become in contact with air they turn kind of gray and when they dry out and look like a sesame seed (sorry for the graphic words LOL) Don't panic like I did, you can only get it if you eat an infected flea. Good luck! Maggie |

| You do need to get your dog to the vet to get the meds to take care of worms but its nothing to stress out about. Its not life threatening for sure

| Oh I did forget to add, that if these are Tape Worms, they get these from eating a flea. So you will need to take of the Flea problem as well.

| Update! Thanks everyone. I didn't have time to check YT till today. I rescheduled her vet appt. So instead of bringing her in today, I took her in yesterday. I'm a worry wart so I wanted to bring her in asap. The vet (my sis-in-law) checked her out and gave her medicine for the worms and for fleas. I haven't seen any fleas on her so I'm not exactly sure how she got worms. But everything is A OK. She's 2 lbs and 10 ounces already! |

| Tape worms don't always show up in a fecal sample because the worm lets out segments every now and then. If you have seen them then it probably is tapeworm and yes they are spread by fleas. No sense in treating for tape worm until the fleas are gone because you will just have to treat again. Get the medication and treat for fleas. Once your sure there are no fleas in the home or on the dog you can treat for the worms. |
