| update on my Coco Hi, I haven't written in quite a while. My 81/2 month old Coco was spayed 5 weeks ago. At first, my vet wanted me to wait until she had gone through one heat cycle. He said it would make her 'stronger' as far as bouncing back after surgery especially at her small size. I was in a panic about the whole 'heat' thing, hating the thought of going through it. Then, I'd have to wait another couple of months for her hormones to normalize too. By 6 months, she already had several baby teeth that weren't budging, but, the adult teeth were almost fully through. I consulted with him again and this time, he said that we'd go ahead at 7 months with the spaying. By then, he thought maybe those baby teeth would be gone as well. He even had his partner do the surgery as he said she has really tiny hands. So, of course, I was a nervous wreck the day of the surgery, but, she came through with flying colors. Coco had to stay the night, so she made lots of new friends. I'm so glad that surgery is in the past, funny thing was that she never even needed the Kiss E-Collar that I had made for her. Her sutures were internal and the skin was glued with surgical glue. By looking at her now, you could never tell she had a whopping one inch incision. No wonder my vet wanted someone with small hands to do the surgery. Otherwise, Coco is doing really well. She seemed to be calming down a bit, but in the last week she has become a holy terror again. I guess it's just a stage. Her potty training is going very well. Actually, I was beginning to think I could 'officially' pronounce her trained, but, when I came home from the store earlier, found that she had peed on the rug! I was very upset as her wee wee pads were very available to her. I've read that you can't say that she's really trained unless she goes at least a month without an accident. With my other yorkie she could go many, many months without an 'accident' and then all of a sudden have one. However, I'll never believe that some of the 'accidents' are truly accidental. Yorkies are so smart, I think they know exactly what they're doing. Does anyone agree? Since Coco is 4 1/2 lbs. at 8 1/2 months, we're thinking that her full adult weight won't be much more than 5 lbs. What does anyone think about that? I feel like she won't be her full weight till she's about a year. Is that wrong? Her father was 5 lbs. and her mother was 6 lbs. if that matters. Thanks for letting me share. Pam |
