Urine smells! Hey guys, I have 3 yorkies...The youngest is almost 1year old now. My middle girl has always been stubborn with house training. We have laminant floors in most of the rooms. I have a large rug in the living room that I bought about 5 years ago after I thought she was pretty well trained. Well every now then they have an accident even though I lay pee pads out for them. I always clean the stain with an enzyme cleaner. I have been cleaning the rug with carpet cleaner about once to twice a month for the past few months, yet I still cannot get that urine smell out!! Ive tried pet carpet shampoo, Vinegar and have even mixed the enzyme with the carpet shampoo. Still, I cant get that smell out! Does anyone know of anything that will help. i have almost given up and decided that probably buy a new rug. I really hate to get rid of it, because its pretty costly to replace. Im thinking its a lost cause at this point. Thanks for any advice!!

Get you hands on a steam vacuum, put the enzyme on the rug and vacuum over it. While the rug is still wet spread kitty litter over it. Allow rug to dry completely and then scrap off the clumped kitty litter. A quick once over with a regular vacuum to get rid of any left over litter and you shouldn't be able to smell it. However I must warn you your yorkies will be able to smell it and will always see your lovely rug as a giant pee-pad so be careful! They'll want to reclaim it. =)

Most of those enzyme "spays" are supposed to completely saturate the area and often go to the extent of putting saran over the area and apply pressure with books for a day etc. so if you are using them as a regular cleaner it might not actually get rid of the smell.... AND the cleaner often smells like urine! But maybe they are marking hence the constant smell. Its almost impossible to catch them if they are quick, and with 3 of them having a turf war literally "under your nose" it would get smelly.

I also bought a black light in hopes of trying to find any urine stains on the rug that I may have missed cleaning. But, the light didnt hold up to its claims I will try and the kitty liter...I had read somewhere that using vinegar could bring the amonia smells in urine stains..is this true?? I thought it was supposed to help get rid of odor?

Also, what brands of enzymatic cleaners are you using? The ones you can buy at say Walmart, for instance, have never worked for me. Nature's Miracle has, but I do follow the directions exactly. Also, are you sure the enzymatic clear is saturating through the entire rug? That's the only reason I can think of for the urine smell remaining.

I use an enzyme cleaner that Cesar Milan endorses. It has a lemon scent to it.

| Have you tried going to the manufacturer's website to see if you can contact them or if they have an FAQ section that addresses your problem? Maybe they will be able to help you.
