| All Texans, step up to the plate and Rescue Spare a thought for an unlikely victim of the drought that is plaguing Texas this year - the donkey. Donkey abandonment is on the rise in the Lone Star state, with cash-strapped owners abandoning the animals in droves. Nonprofit Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue is currently housing 500 rescued donkeys in Texas, its highest total ever. This compares with about 100 reported cases of donkey abandonment nationally last year. The organization says that the spate of donkey abandonments may be being spurred by their low market value. |

| I saw about 30 donkeys at the shelter I went to the other day. Some of them are really kind of cute. While I don't know what I'd do with a donkey I'm helping out the shelter any way I can.

| On a similar note Austin could really use all the help it can get right now. I work at an animal shelter in Dallas and 1/2 our staff is down in Austin putting in 13-15 hour days helping out all the displaced animals from the fires going on down there. If any one in that area can volunteer their time or money to the skin and furr families down there I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated.

| I live in Texas but I live in a restricted subdivision. I can't even do any major landscaping without first getting approval. The drought is really bad. We are currently battling one big wildfire that burned over 23000 acres and another one started today. I have always hated hurricanes but now I am praying that we get one (a nondestructive one of course) just to help us with this drought. |

| I have read great things about Donkeys being good guardians for flocks of sheep. Has anyone been in touch with a wool growers association?

| I wish I could have a donkey ( don't live on a farm ) but when I was a child we had one and it was like having a big dog he would be so happy when he saw you and would come running. Loved my horse but a donkey has a lot more personally.

| Like you guys, if I could have one here, I would get one. We have Peacocks, but that is all they will allow without going to court again. |
