| Annual Check Ups So it's time for Carmel and Emma's annual check up. However, this year, they don't need rabies or DHPP. They got the 3 year rabies and the 3 year DHPP. The only shot they may need is bordatella and I was wondering if that's necessary? They stay home with no other dogs, but do go to dog parks and parks with other dogs too. I was wondering what I need to get them this year as part of the annual checkup and what I should ask the (new) vet??? There's nothing wrong with them, we are just taking them in as part of the annual check up...Thanks!

| If they go to dog parks to be groomed or anywhere around dogs they need the bordatella.

| My dogs don't get bordetella vaccine anymore. It doesn't cover all strains and my Barney got kennel cough twice shopping at petsmart while vaccinated. We do obedience training and it's not required at our school. I believe in annual blood profiles for my dogs as part of preventative care.

| bordatella is one of those things that you just have to weigh the risks for your individual dog. I don't do bordatella personally, mine aren't around a constant stream of strange dogs, and even with the vaccine they can get kennel cough- so we have chosen to forego it.

| I agree with the others. I'll only get it when I have to...like a few weeks before Bambi gets spayed the vet requires it I see both sides of the fence on these, but personally in a normal setting mine do not get it.

| My dogs get the bordatella. I really wish my doggies could skip it. But, I teach puppy training classes and it is required. We also use a doggie park and one of our puppies is being trained as a potential therapy dog, so our Vet thinks it is a good precaution. My Vet uses the agility area at the same doggie park. |

| We would skip bordatella but the day care they go to once in a while and the grooming both require it. I'm curious about doing blood profile as part of the annual exam that 107barney suggests. I haven't heard of that before and would love to know more. |

| Callie and Sammy get bordatella because we take them to dog parks, dog events, and pet stores.

| My vet recommended doing it every 6 months.... then again I am in manhattan so it might be because of the proximity of large numbers of dogs. |

| Would I need bordetella for walking them on the sidewalk? We won't be going to dog parks as much anymore because my bf is moving. I will take them out for walks and other dog owners also walk their dogs too. My babies haven't gotten kennel cough before. They got their bordetella shot at 1 year of age and I've been taking them to dog parks since they were 4 months old. I don't know if the bordetella is effective or not, but thought it'd be safer for them to have it. Now that I hear everyone not wanting for their dogs to have it, I'm having second thoughts...Blood planel is a wonderful idea!! I will look into that!! I will definitely have the vet look at teeth, patellas, trachea, ribs, etc. Is there anything else to include for a physical exam? Thanks for all the suggestions thus far!

| Jenn, I think you should talk to your vet and see what they think. Yes, dogs pick up germs everywhere. Esp. If they are walking where other dogs have been so it's hard to say which way to go. I've heard it's like a cold in a dog so this'll be the first year not getting it but gonna see how it goes. I walk mine and take them to pet stores but only when they are healthy. If they seemed sick I'd have them stay home. But not every one does that so it's really a judgment call only you can make. Sorry

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Do you groom your dogs yourself or do you take them somewhere? The groomer I used in San Diego required it for every dog that came in to her shop. The one I use now doesn't.

| I groom them myself. So you also don't get the bordetella? Do you bring your babies to the dog park?

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | No, I don't do Bordetella vaccines any more. We don't go to dog parks, either. If I were ever to have to board them for some reason, I would consider it though.
