Dew claws are something all puppies are born with (if it is indeed a dew claw), just most breeders have them removed along with tail docking. They can pose a possible hazard and are not necessary. However, there is nothing wrong if a dog DOES have one. I would just watch it for any possible injury in the future.

Hi, my little Daisy had a 3rd dew claw that wasn't formed properly and was very wobbly, the vet thought it best to remove it when she went and had her spay op. The removal went very well and she had to have a bandage on for a week or so. Now i can't tell which leg it was even on!!

The Vet can easily remove it when the pup is fixed. Sometime it may be missed if there is one on the rear leg. No big deal at all. I dated a girl many years ago that had one.

My puppymill rescue has dew claws on her back legs. When the rescue spayed her, they weren't removed, so I didn't think it was worth having her put under anesthesia just for removal. I just have to be careful not to catch them when combing her out and keep them trimmed. If I'm not doing nails myself, I have to specifically mention she has them on her back legs since they are often missed under all her hair.

I would have it removed when you have your puppy spayed/neutered.

Gizmo had a total of 6 dew claws!!! 1 on each front paw and 2 on each back paw!!! When i got him neutered they removed the ones on his back legs. So they removed 4 dew claws and now he has just the front ones

One of mine had a dew claw. Not a bid deal, but you have to remember to trim it every once and a while before it digs back into their little legs. The good thing is you can trim a long length of it at once, and it seems not to hurt them and does not bleed... a big difference from a regular nail.

My Allie who I adopted in March has her dew claws on the front and back. Her front are very attached, but her back one's are just attached by skin and not at the bone. However at times she does chew on the back one's. So I'm always checking those.
I talked with the Vet and we will think about removing her back one's when she has a dental done. Which won't be until next March, she had just had her teeth cleaned and was spayed by the Rescue Group in March before I adopted her.

It varies by vet, by city and by state. So you should call your vet and ask their pricing.
