Default New to the site

Hello fellow Yorkie owners. I just wanted to chime in and say hey. I owned a yorkie from 1999 to 2005 until someone stole him. My wife finally decided she wanted another one so we just picked him up today. He's 6 weeks old born April 10,2011. Since he's so small the vet said he can't get all of his shots at once.

Just this week 23 May he's received a parvo shot and was dewormed. His next appt is on 6 June. My question is when is it safe from him to go outside and when is it safe for him to be around another dog that CURRENT on their shots?

Thanks in Advance,

I don't believe he should be outside or around other dogs until a couple of weeks after the last of his puppy shots. I kept my dog in until she was about 16 weeks, with your little one having to space them more it may take longer to complete the series.
He's so, so young though, I would not take him out until the Vet gives you the ok.

Hi welcome to Yorkie Talk

Well, technically he's too young to be away from his mom at 6 weeks old (ideally he should have had another 6 more weeks yet with her) so you have a really baby puppy on your hands.

I honestly wouldn't take him outside really at all unless he was in your arms for a few more weeks yet.

Puppies shouldn't, as a rule of thumb, be around other dogs or out walking where other dogs could have been until they've had their last puppy shots at around 4-5 months old (rabies vaccine might not be given till a month later than that, but you're ok there as long as you're not going hiking in the woods or something). Your vet was definatly right not to give him more than one vaccine at a time and you should actually keep doing it that way his whole life, it's just safer. Just wait for your vet to give you the ok before you take him around other dogs or walking through the neighborhood.

Good luck and congrats on your new baby

wow a 6 week old yorkie puppy not with his mother or littermates... This will make it hard for you and your family to make sure the little puppy is eating enough , going the bathroom and kept warm. He is very young and vulnerable right now. Vaccines need to be done before the pup is allowed outside or around dogs, Even people who have dogs, visiting your home, can carry the parvo virus into your home. your wife and you are going to always have to be with the puppy and treat him like he is a newborn, becasue that is what he is. I thought my yorkie pup was very litttle , but she was already 3 pounds.
i am sure you and your wife have found out that this tiny little puppy needs special care.
Welcome to YT, and congradulations .

Hello There,

Welcome to YT and Congratulations on your new baby..

You can take your puppy outside only 2 weeks after the last shot. This is the amount of time the vaccine needs to completely protect your little one (15 days).

If he is too young or too small you should consider wait little more because he will be too fragile, but you can take him for little walks on your garden.

Ok everyone,

My wife was afraid of this, she asked the breeder if we should take the pup this soon and the breeder said she always gives her pups away this young. Is this going to be a problem?

1. How much should he be eating?
2. What type of food should I be feeding him
3. Should I give him milk, if so what kind?
4. Any special care for him since he's away from his mom and only 6 weeks old?

Boy, I am sure not an authority on anything but I do know one thing, watch that blood sugar. Make sure that baby eats often and get some Nutracal to have on hand. I can not believe she let that baby go that young. Back years ago I got one of my schnauzers at 6wks. She didn't even know how to lap water. You have to really be careful and search and search out a good breeder. I didn't know the difference back then but schnauzers are alittle bit more hardyer than those little fragile yorkie babies. Hope everything works out for you and the little guy. What type of food did she have him on???

Welcome and congrats on your new baby at 6 weeks most yorkie babies has just started the weaning process from their moms and i help mine by soaking the kibble in warm water still soft since most don't have teeth until 5 wks or later

I sometimes give them baby rice cereal mixed with goats milk and i give them a dish of the goats milk cut 50/50 with warm water (i use canned goats milk from walmart) i hope this helps

listen to your vet he sounds very knowledgeable on the shots..some are not

He is far too young to have left his mother and litter mates. I've also very surprised that your vet didn't mention his age as being a problem. The YTCA states:

Quote:
All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of twelve (12) weeks of age to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and temperament development through interaction with siblings, dam and other dogs.
I have no experience with a puppy so young but what I do know is that one of mine was sold too early and she has many socialization issues.

At 6 weeks of age this baby should still be with his Momma. My little girl had puppies on March 24 2011 and they are just now leaving the Momma. I found all this out from YT. I always thought 8 weeks was when they should leave but boy was I wrong. They learn so much from their Mom in the first three months. I hope that your baby is doing well and congrats.

Hi and welcome to YT. So sorry to hear about your other baby who was stolen from you. Congrats on your new baby, what is name?

I do not have very much experience with puppies so I cannot offer any information except to steer you to the Yorkie Health and Diet Forum. There is probably lots of information in that section. Also maybe try posting a thread in that forum as there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks who keep up with the threads in their. Best of luck to you and your baby!

Hi there! I'm a newbie as well and did get my lil man early (according to the thread) but not as young as yours. This site has been so informative, as well as my friend who is also a Yorkie owner of two and I have found that Nutracal is very help for my young one! Best of luck to you and your newborn and don't forget to register this lil one. They are truly precious.

Mine go no where until minimum 3 1/2 months.
He should not have had any vaccinations at all but too late now. WAit at least 4 weeks to do anymore. YOur vet should know better.
Do not give him milk, it will only give him diahrrea and stomach upsets. I don't even wean with milk.
He needs to have food down all the time. I soak a puppy dry kibble in hot water once cooled. put it down. You can mix in minced cooked chicken bit of rice that sort of thing. Make sure he is eating. Also keep Nutrical on hand, it is a high calorie paste that will prevent hypoglycemia, low blood sugar from which they can die very quickly.
He should not be going outside for at least a month or more. Don't take him anywhere except the Vets when needed. He is very vulnerable at this stage.
