Help my new puppy won't eat We had our puppy 11-1-05. There was only 1 in the litter. All seemed to be fine until las night I noticed the puppy didn't seem to be eating. I got her latched on last night, but couldn't seem to get her to do it again. I took her to the vet first thing this a.m. So now I am giving her food through a syringe even though momma has milk. Any suggestions?

puppy not eating She weighs 3 oz. He gave her subq fluids, gave me formula and glucose and told me to try to get her to have some every hour. He said she was dehydrated. and she doesn't seem to have the suckling response. Momma's milk is fine. He's not sure if she is going to make it. We are very worried.

Make sure that the puppy is always warm , no draft . Did you have a test made by the vet for the milk of your bitch ?

Awe, I'm so sorry to hear this. Did the vet check for a cleft palate? Is the mother interested in the pup? Does she clean it? If she wants to take care of it, it will stand a better chance of survival. If not, it can still happen with a lot of work, dedication and around the clock care from you. Please keep us updated. I sure hope the little girl pulls through.

| Oh poor little baby. Keep her warm, and do what the vet said about feeding her. Did the vet check for a cleft palate? If not, maybe you should bring her back. I hope a Breeder will find your post. They can give you some better advice, they know a lot more than I do. Please keep us posted. (((((((BABY)))))))

I agree about the cleft palate. Although I would think the baby would have milk coming back out of her nose if she had that. If you feed that puppy every hour, her tummy will always be full and she will not have the hunger instinct to suckle. SO, PUT HER TO NIPPLE BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY FEED HER EVERY HOUR! Do you have experience with putting the puppy to nurse? I am not criticizing, I am simply asking. If you are not experienced, maybe you can ask another breeder to show you different ways to try to get the puppy to latch on and suckle. She is very small but smaller puppies than that have survived. Someone already asked if mom is taking care of the baby. If not, she might know something we don't. That does not mean to give up-just that you can try to tell by her actions if the baby is sick or well and just needing a boost. I ALWAYS GIVE MY NEWBORNS A SQUIRT OF BENE-BAC!! No matter what size, shape or sex.. It is the beneficial bacteria in the puppy's bowel. The baby needs to be kept at temps between 100.5 and 102.. Normal for dogs. She cannot regulate her own body temp so she will die if she gets too cold.. I so hope you have success in getting this baby thru the crisis. But, if not, just know that you did everything you could and do not blame yourself or anyone. Sometimes, we just cannot save one. Prayers coming to you and her..

thank you There is no cleft palate. The mother's milk was not checked. I've had a few successes in getting her to latch on. We our feeding her hourly around the clock. The momma is taking good care of her, keeping her clean and warm. She has actually had 2 bowel movements that I have seen. I take this is a good sign. Thank you all.
