| Is every breeder who advertises "teacup" size disreputable? Hello everyone - I am beginning the quest for a new baby (probably two - I think 2 are easier than one). I have gotten on a list with a breeder here but there will not be puppies available for at least 7 months. So I have been looking around for a breeder with the idea of possibly getting a baby now and then a sibling in 6 or 7 months. I do not want a puppy mill puppy. I have been through that when I was young and uneducated and though we spent $1000s on vets, we still lost our little girl at age 8 with multiple health problems. Not that puppy mill babies don't deserve homes - they most certainly do. But we have had rescues since 1989 and they have had multiple health problems and we had to go through losing them. We just want to find a healthy puppy with a good chance at a long life. We are just too heart sore to lose another baby or watch them go through awful illnesses. I realize that there are no guarantees in life - but we just want to maximize our chances for a healthy baby. I have seen a few breeders who sound good on paper except they advertise teacups. I have always thought this was a red flag since #1. they don't exist and 2. they may be breeding down in size to the dogs detriment. Am I wrong about this prejudice? I of course would check out any operation in person before buying a little dog, but don't want to bother with viewing a kennel that is disreputable. Do you view "teacup" as a red flag term? |

| To answer your question in simple terms... yes, it is a red flag. Hope you find a good breeder - first. Sometimes it's hard to wait but then you find that it was worth it.

| Yes I believe they are also they are focusing on one trait rather than the health of the dog and the total package. I like the 5-7 lb range myself. That size dog is self sufficent they can climb stairs or get on the couch etc by them self. You can worry less with them about injury. They are still small enough to pick up aned carry. I have one that is 6lbs and I think that is a great size

| yes, it is a red flag ... Try finding a reputable breeder in your area or here on YT . That is your best bet on getting a healthy new baby , that will not cause you so many health problems in the long run. Good luck in your search .

| Thank you all for the welcomes. It is most appreciated. I have loved looking at the pictures of all of your sweet babies. It helps me when the loss of mine becomes unbearable. Rest assured, that I will thoroughly investigate any puppy I get. Oh the evil things I would do to puppy mill breeders if I could. |
