| Hello, I'm New I just wanted to introduce myself. I have been viewing this wonderful site for a few weeks. This is an awesome community and a great resource for Yorkie lovers as well as lovers of all dogs. I had a Yorkie when I was a teen who was my constant companion and best friend. I lost him after eight years when he was hit by a van outside my home when he bolted out the front door after a cat. I was devastated when he died. Since my Brandy died I have married, had a son, divorced and remarried. My husband has two Border Collies and always snickered at people who had small dogs, calling them "ratdogs". So I never thought I would own another Yorkie. The Border Collies are getting old (they are 13 yr. old siblings). About 2 months ago we decided to get another dog, we got a chin-chihuahua mix. To keep him company we thought we'd get another small dog. The next day my husband took me to a "breeder" who had yorkie/foxterrier mix puppies. When we got to the woman's home she said we would have to ride to her kennel about a mile down the road, she mentioned that the police told her she could not sell any more dogs from her home or they would shut her down (HUGE red flag there). When we got to the kennel we were greeted by a horrible stench. The place was clearly a discusting mess. She brought out 5 small black dogs that she said were the yorkie/foxterriers, they were missing hair and their coats were a wreck. I told my husband, thanks for the thought, but I dont want a dog from this place and these dont look like yorkies at all. Then the woman went back behind the door and came out with 4 yorkie puppies. My husband felt drawn to one of the little females. He said he wanted to buy her. I kept shaking my head no. I knew this was a bad place. He said we would be rescuing her from a terrible existance. The little puppy was missing hair on her head, she was caked with feces and reeked of the kennel, and she was the clearly the runt of the litter. All I could say on the way home with her barfing on my lap was that I think this was a bad mistake and we'll be heartbroken. Two weeks later she took ill, she started vomiting and stopped eating. She lost even more weight off her 2lb. frame. We took her to urgent care and $400.00 later we still did not know what was wrong. We took her home that night and were preparing ourselves for the worst. For another week we force fed her and kept her hydrated as much as possible. We took her to the vet again and found out she also had infections in both ears. We have treated the infection with medication and finally, I am happy to say she got better and is now playfully active. Cocoa has got the sweetest disposition and my husband is completely in love. He melts into mush when he sees her and he put her picture on his cell phone so he can see her all the time. He calls her his baby. It is so funny when I think this was the man who called them "ratdogs." Seriously though, I hope prospective puppy buyers take heed to the hundreds of posts on these boards that advise finding a reputable breeder. I cannot think of many things that are sadder than taking a helpless puppy home only to face sickness and possibly death. So far it has been a costly emotional roller-coaster ride. Our baby is fine now, but who knows what we will face in the future. |
