| will the "runt" of the litter always stay smaller? Well I did it....I have put down a deposit for a new baby girl.....took me forever to let my heart out way my head..lol. Cooper is our 2 yr old boy that we love to death, but I have been wanting a girl for about 1 year now and finally took the plunge. Coopers mommy had her last litter of babies and had 2 girls. There is quite a difference in size between her 2 babies....one is much more longer and skinnier/leaner looking and the other girl has shorter legs but is much chunkier looking more compact looking while the other looks so tiny. My question when there is a good difference in size between 2 littermates like this, does the runt always stay the smallest? Or do they catch up with each other so to speak so there is no real way to tell if the runt will defiantly be smaller throughout life? Or the breeder has said alot of times the chunkier 1 just eats all the time and pushes the little one out of the way but once the are weaned many times they then either catch up with each other in size or at least become much closer? Is the runt always going to stay the smallest or no real way to tell?

| My Myah is a "runt" (but don't tell her that). She did stay the smallest. She will be 2 in Feb. and is Usually around the 3 lb. mark. My schnauzer years ago was also a runt and she stayed small too. I guess there really isn't a way to know for sure. |

| So far the runt is still smallest! My Maggie had three boys over 8 weeks ago, and so far the runt is still the runt! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Morgan was the runt of the litter. When i took her home at 3 months she was still the smallest. I saw one of her brothers a year or so later and she was still smaller then him tho not by much. i don't know about the other two. Morgan is 4.5lbs now and her brother at the time was 5.5lbs

| My gracie was 2.5 oz at birth.. he sister was 6 oz.. there is one pound difference in weight today gracie being the just over 5 pounds.. Kacee was the runt and he is 3.8 pounds and his siblings were all larger then him by over double his weight.. I know a breeder who the runt was the only girl and ended up being 7 pounds at 5 months and the two boys might see 3 pounds.. so hard to tell.. why does the breeder want to have them sold at such a young age.. she could let you have pick as they get a bit older...anne |

| The breeder is not wanting me to pick right now, it is only that she had 2 babies and I was first on her waiting list and so she was nice enough to let me see both of them first. I was just curious in general if runts always stay smaller or just varies from litter to litter as she said.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Runt not always the smallest. We had a litter of St Bernards once. We ended up keeping the runt. She ended up being the biggest. Had large bones & head from her dad. Her mother was large, a little finer boned but quite tall. The runt ended up with dad's bones, head & mom's height. She was huge!

| I hadn't meant to keep Piggy but the people who orginall wanted because he was the smallest when they came to pick him up the lady fell in love with another pup who was bigger whick was fine well he is only 4#s and Piggy the one I ended keeping is 6#s and he was quite a bit smaller than the other two boys so I think it varies from litter to litter.I also had a litter of 2 girls with a stud I had used for the first time he was a short stocky while female weighed a little more but was finer boned the 2 girls were almost exactly the same weight the whole time one turned out to be 4.5 lbs with a bigger bone structure and the other only 2.5lbs short and a very fine bone structure you can use the puppy growth chart scale and often times it is accurate but not always |

| He wasn't a Yorkie but when I was a kid I was allowed to only have the runt of my uncle's litter because he was so small. Well when Pal grew up he was the biggest of the litter. Twice as big as his brother's and sister's who stayed on my uncle's farm in NJ. |

| ...thanks much for all your responses. I really thought I wanted the small one/runt but once I went to go seem them I feel in love with the bigger one but still was not sure. I thought all week about getting the runt, but went back on Friday and held the bigger one and it is just an instant bond.....I know I picked the right one for me she is soooo sweet and she was meant to be for us her eyes followed mine and I put her in my arm next to my chest while I was talking to the breeder and just stroked her with 1 finger and she feel fast asleep in like 2 minutes...she is Cooper's real/full sister, same mom and dad and she has not had another litter for over a year or more and this is her very last litter so feel like this was meant to be.....pictures below of my new Miss Chloe, It will seem like FOREVER waiting for her to come home!

| Wow, sounds like this can go both ways! Miles was the runt of his litter, and he is still smaller than his siblings. His brother is 9 lbs, sister is 7 lbs, and Miles is 5 lbs. But from the other posts, it sounds like being a runt doesn't necessarily predict relative size later on! |
