Yorkie Taken By Coyote, Family Says Family Pet Attacked In Back Yard POSTED: 4:59 pm EDT July 13, 2009 UPDATED: 7:25 pm EDT July 13, 2009 http://www.wfsb.com/sh/storytools/storytools_buzz.gifhttp://www.wfsb.com/sh/storytools/st..._delicious.gifhttp://www.wfsb.com/sh/storytools/storytools_digg.gifhttp://www.wfsb.com/sh/storytools/st...s_facebook.gifhttp://www.wfsb.com/sh/storytools/storytools_reddit.gifhttp://www.wfsb.com/sh/storytools/storytools_rss.gifhttp://www.wfsb.com/sh/storytools/storytools_print.gifhttp://www.wfsb.com/sh/storytools/storytools_email.gif WOODBRIDGE, Conn. -- A Woodbridge family said Monday that its Yorkshire Terrier was recently attacked by a coyote. Karen Leibowitz said the attack on her 4-year-old Yorkie, named Teddy, happened in the blink of an eye. "He was right here, and then I went into the other room and within seconds he was gone," she said. Leibowitz said the dog disappeared right from her back yard. http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/ibs.har...ord=123456789? "It's sad, she said. "We'll miss teddy a lot." Leibowitz said her teenage daughter, Maggie, heard the whole thing. "I heard, like, a terrible yelp, and I knew something was wrong," Maggie said. The Leibowitz family said their other Yorkie, Lilah, now seems like she's missing her best friend. "And I guess my dad saw a coyote in the neighbor's yard, and we pretty much knew from then on that he was probably taken by coyotes," Maggie said. Maggie said her father also told the family that he saw some sets of eyes in the woods near their home. He said the town is aware of the coyote issue and that he's trying to figure out if it will have them relocated. In the meantime, the Leibowitzes said they can't rely on just their electric fence anymore. "I really thought I never had a problem," Karen Leibowitz said. "I knew there were coyotes out there, but I never thought a coyote would come right to the back steps of my patio with the lights on, people moving in the house." The Leibowitz family spoke with Eyewitness News in order to get the word out about coyote attacks. They said neighbors have come forward about coyote attacks on their own pets as well since Eyewitness News got involved.

| That is so sad I feel for that family... I just lost my whole new flock of chickens to a fishercat a few weeks before I picked up my two yorkie babies. I am thinking it happened for a reason so that nothing will happen to my two babies. Wildlife... anything can happen.

| I am so paranoid of the coyotes in my area. We see them regularly. One even bit a 2 yr old girl a couple of weeks ago. My furbabies do not go outside alone that's for sure!

| Believe me, I know. One was spotted crossing the street by where we live. They come around in the summer months. I saw one two years ago running up and down a hill in the woods while walking Buddy. I thought it was a German Shepard loose but someone told me it was a cayote! I am very nervous walking him at night. I don't go to the dog walking side of the street, it's too dark. I am waiting to be reported for walking my dog on the common property but I don't care. I"ll explain if and when I'm reported. It's lit much better on that side of the street. That poor family. I can't imagine living with that nightmare. I worry every night we go out and can't wait to get back home. So very sad. |

| I know as well, There's so many coyotes here. I've seen some stand literally near my front yard on my lawn. I have to be INSANELY careful or something's going to happen.
