| Is using a candle warmer bad? Once in a while I use a candle warmer with a jar candle on it...I think it's a Gold Canyon sugar cookie candle. Anyway, I have noticed on the days when I use it all of my dogs are very calm and nap a bit more than usual. Is there anything bad about using the candle warmer? I haven't noticed any bad affects on them. Can the smell harm them in any way? |

| A number of years ago a friend of mine said not to burn candles around our little ones and I couldn't remember why until I did this search. I know they are talking about birds but I would think it would apply to our small dogs also. Some candles on the market are made with wicks that have either lead bottoms or lead cores that emit potentially dangerous levels of lead into the air. Not all candles are made with wicks that have metallic cores. The practice is primarily used with candles that are designed to burn longer, such as scented or ceremonial candles. Lead was detected in small quantities in emissions from zinc-based wicks, suggesting that lead may be a common contaminant found in both the wick and the wax of candles made with these wicks. The levels of lead were small, but still could represent a health risk to birds over a long period of time. Don't burn scented candles as a bird's respiratory system is delicate and toxicity may result from using them in its presence. Petroleumbased candles can also emit toxic fumes. Use beeswax-based candles, as an alternative. I also advise against the use of incense, potpourri or any other items that carry a strong fragrance.

| I do remember that about birds...when we had ours we didn't burn candles or use Teflon coated pans. I wonder if it would be any safer if I pulled the wick out of the candle? With the warmer plate it melts the wax to liquid form and doesn't burn anything but I could pull the wick out with the little metal bottom attached. |

| The article is against strong fragrances also but I do from time to time burn a soy candle with a cotton wick. I would guess some of this is just like smoking around the dogs but I don't know for sure.

| Okay then its a deal...the next time you make cookies you are sending some to me...because if you send your rowdy bunch instead then when I send them back to you I would have to hide a few of my crazy ones in there to go on vacation at your house..

| After my friend warned me I stopped for the most part..It is very rare for me to burn candles anymore. She did Yorkie rescue with me in AZ and had beautiful birds and her 5 yorkies.
