| Do our pups recognize their friends by sight or scent? I thought about this while walking Buddy this morning when we ran into one of his friends(yorkie) Rocky. He was so excited to see him it dawned on me weather he recognized him by sight or scent. Anyone know? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Their nose is thousands of times better than humans, and they distinguish through scent. He might "see" another dog that looks familiar, but the scent is what tells him if it's the same dog. Hearing is their next best sense followed by sight. Taste isn't very good in dogs and smell rather than taste their foods.

| According to Cesar Millian (The Dog Whisperer) it's "nose, eyes, then ears"... IMO, I would assume they'd go by scent first becase they can smell other dogs from a long distance

| I knew that the scent was dominant in dogs but just wondered. Thanks, everyone. Very interesting. Wish I didn't taste my food, maybe I wouldn't eat so much |

| When we use to take obiedance class it was amazing. They would gather like students the first day of class and as each dog came in they would all stand togeather and greet the dog that come next. They knew exactly who was in their class. As this was at petsmart and other dogs were there. They only did it with the ones in there class. Then hang out togeather. Its amazing how that worked.

Just to clear my post up, I was comparing their senses to humans, but you and Cesar are correct that sight comes before hearing in order of importance to the dog. I meant that their noses and ears work better than humans, but our eyes and taste buds are superior.

| I go with the nose. My dogs know when someone is walking their dog around our cul-de-sac and they start barking. The dogs aren't making any noise and my dogs cannot see them there so the only other way they would know is by the scent. Same thing when someone comes to the door. My pups start barking, but after sniffing at the door, they stop if it's someone they know. If it's a stranger, they keep barking.

| I think is the scent too, I don't remember if was at my vet or here lol that I heard that even in their poop like everydog has a particular smell and even when a neighbor dog leave a present in your front yard and your dog smell it they can't recognize the dog, I think is that is why they smell each other butt, is like hey hola just keeping in touch with you |
