| Help! puppy playing too rough Help! My 11 week old male yorkie can be so sweet and calm! Although, at times he bites very hard and plays tooo rough! I am getting afraid that he is going to bite one of my kids! Is this normal behavior? I have to put him in his gated area and let him calm down. No one in our family has been playing and encouraging this behavior! Does someone have any suggestions on how to stop this!! I have been firm and walked away! |

| When my "Girls" were puppies and wanted to rough house I gave them cloth squeaker toys to distract them from my fingers and nose. I'd make the toy squeak and then throw it for them to chase. It seemed to help the nipping and got them tired from running around. Good Luck & welcome to YT!! Kathy, Maggie & Bailey |

| i always did the same thing--DISTRACT from fingers and toes with doggie toys. Just remember those hands and feet are always moving near their mouths so of course puppies think they are to play with!!! |

| When he bites or nibbles your fingers make a loud "Ow" noise and withdraw you finger . His littermates would do the same if it gets too rough, he just needs to learn the rules. Good luck with your new furbaby.

| Yes, I always give him a toy and usually have to get on a couch. He is not responding to "no" at all! No one in our house can even get on the floor without him trying to bite and play rough sometimes! |

| Good advice so far. Distracting and the "ow" sound (which tellS them that it hurts and is distracting). He's so young. He will outgrow it. I don't know how young your kids are, but do be careful. Their little teeth are like razors. And a nip to a child could either cause the child to be afraid of his/her new puppy or could cause the child to innocently react physically harming the puppy. For puppies, toys are for playing with, not fingers. But they have to learn that. But he WILL outgrow it as long as you keep working with him. Just today, I was playing with Coby (8 mos old) with my hands (something we've not done very much) and it dawned on me how perfect his bite pressure was on my hand.... enough to hold but not hurt. The only time I get hurt is when we both reach for a toy at the same time. OUCH!!!
