Here are two scenarios:

#1 Pup is 1lb even at 7 weeks old. Mom weighs 3 1/2lbs and dad weighs 2 1/2lbs, grandparents weight not recieved yet. What would you put him at as an adult?

#2 Pup is 7 weeks old. Mom weighs 4lbs and dad weighs 3 1/2 pounds. Grandparents = females in the 5-6 range / males not over 4
What would you put him at as an adult?

My vet said that a lot goes into the determination of size, but he said that as a good rule of thumb,take a look at the mom. Actually, both vets at this clinic told me this. If this is true,then it seems that puppy #1 would be around 3 and a half pounds full grown.

Boy, there are some folks out there breeding some awfully small bitches! The rule of thumb is 3 X the 8 week weight but I have found that 2 X 12 weeks weight is usually a closer guess. I was also told that when the dam and sire are close in size the male pup should be about 1 pound bigger than the dam and the female pup should be about 1 pound smaller than the dam. All in all it's still just a guessing game as in the end they'll be the size God meant them to be. Your best bet when looking for good breeding stock is to go with quality and close linebreeding as they are more likely to throw a consistant genotype. Good luck in your search, it's really scarey out there!

I'm just researching before shopping, trying to decide on what direction I want to take my line. If you dig a bit you find all kinds of skelatons in closets. I've rushed into things before because I'm not the most patient person once I set my mind to something. My haste has landed me with something that I really don't want. There are so many people out there just waiting to take your money. Don't rush, do your homework, decide what will improve your line and get what you really want. At least that's what I'm trying to do this time.

well, I know of a four pound female bred to a three and a half pound boy. She had two puppies. One was three pounds at twelve weeks and the other was two something. A six pound and a four pound adult from the same parents. both parents were from breeders that strive to raise tinies and had all tinies in the lines so where is that six pound adult coming from? Sometimes, I think it is just the luck of the draw.

Do you trust these breeders to tell you the truth? Have you seen the parents and weight them?
I have been asked to groom so many Yorkies in my life..over the phone they were 3 pounds and 5 on my scale...

Unfortunatley is all ove rthe internet

Pup #2 I've been talking with that breeder everyday. There are members here who have bought from her and so far its been good reviews.

Pup #1 I'm still trying to feel out.

Both have sent me pics and weights of the parents, but I'm not able to weigh them myself.

I guess since i'm honest, I can only pray they are too ((((sigh))))

It is all a pure guessing game. 12 weeks you can double the weight, but you just never know for sure. Genetics are huge here. You need to look at the parents, but even that is hard to tell.
For instance........Let's see my female is 5 lbs and my male is 4 1/2 lbs. Males parents were around the same size with the mom a bit bigger...Females parents had a small father. My pups from this litter are a bit over 6 months now...how big would you guess them to be with all of this info??

Both male and female pup are not yet 2 1/2 lbs, but very close and just a little over 6 months. I kept the female and I sure wish she was larger - I think she could've been a nice show girl. Drats! She is our baby though!! Just goes to show you! LOL
