Default miniture or not?

My yorkie had 6 puppies.Mom is the standard size and dad is a miniture,4 of the puppies were around 5-6 onzes when born ,1 was 8 onzes and one of the girls was around 4 onzes, she looks tiny ,I dont know if she is the runt of the litter or if she is going to be a miniture, she is feeding well and gaining weight ,when would it be more obvious to see if she is miniture?this is my 3rd litter to breed but I never had such a size difference before

I've never heard the term "miniature" used with a Yorkie, but maybe in Ireland, where you are, that is what you refer to an extra tiny Yorkie. . . ?

Anyway, she will probably be close to the same size as the others. It could be that she was conceived on the second or third tie and is just a day or two behind the others in development. Or, it could be that her littermates hogged the groceries!

I hate to tell you this but both of your Yorkies are standard one of them can't be minature since there is no such thing as a minature Yorkie. The Standard is stated as any thing UNDER 7 lb. So a 2 lb Yorkie is just a standard as a 6 lb yorkie.

You will be able to tell more about the pups grown up weight at 8 weeks. There is a growth chart here on the general discussion page and also one at yorkiepassion.com.

Best of luck with your new babies.

I don't think you can make any guesses at this stage. You will have a better idea at 8 weeks and even better at 12 weeks. Mine our usually about 4 ounces at birth and mature to be 4 pounds. I don't know on what days you bred or for how long, but puppies in the same litter can be up to a week difference in age. I have seen where the smallest born catches up to the others (and even can pass the others) by the time they are 8 weeks.

Congratulations on your new babies.

what lacy's mom was talking about is the bitch is fertile for approx 5 days. the sperm in the male can live for 3 days. so if she was bred on the first of the 5 days and on the last, the eggs that were fertilized in the last can be up to 8 days later in development . did i explain that well enough?

Hi Pippin,

Yes its to early to tell. Sometimes a puppy is born small, stays smaller even into adulthood. But some are born small and catch up with their litter mates, as others have said. Sometimes they end up the biggest in the long run.
Unlike Humans dogs can even have babies at the same time sired by two different fathers.

My Timmy was the runt of the litter and now he's almost 6 lbs. This is tiny enough for me.
