| Mother not really eating **HELP** Is it normal for the mother to eat lightly after pregnancy (4 days)? I have put turkey, chicken, canned food etc, and it just doesn't seem to entice her like it use to. She'll have a little here and there but it's just doesn't seem right. I was told she has to eat to produce milk. She also pants alot Last edited by littlemeko; 04-13-2006 at 07:29 PM. |

| If she hasnt eaten and she is panting I would advise a vet visit ASAP. Have you checked her temperature? that is usually a precursor to an infection and if thats the case she will not eat. Have you checked her for off colored discharge or unusual odor? Also has she been drinking liquids at all? you must make sure she has plenty of liquid, if you have puppy formula mix some of that up for her with a bit of karo in it. Still if all checks out at the vet and she has no temp, syringe feed her...mix up turkey and rice in the blender, put it into a turkey baster and force feed her. Do the same with liquids. I hope this helps

| Whenever my second female (Cujo) has puppies, for the first week, she won't eat unless I hand feed her. It's just something she wants and by golly, she gets it! (I'd hand fed all of them if they wanted me to!!) I think she just wants to feel special or something. I don't know for sure. Didn't ask her. Suz

another thing to consider if you have the heat pad in the whelping box covering the entire area she could just be too hot. Make sure you have it on low, you have it preferably under the whelping box (warming the surface) and to one side so mom and the pups can move to the other side if theyre too warm.

| Oh yea!! That too!! heating pads are good, but sometimes they get too warm for Mommy!! I only put the pad in 1/2 the box. Then Mom can scooch off of it if she wants to.
