| Litter born yesterday! Question about round ball Mass I had a litter of 5 yorkies born yesterday! They are so cute and doing well. Three boys and two girls. I will have to post pictures soon. After the 5th puppy, I was palpitating mommy's abdomen and noticed a mass, then I notice what appeared to be a head sticking up on her side. I was certain that their was a 6th puppy that didn't show up on the x-ray. My birthing assistant saw it also so I know I wasn't just tired and hallucinating. Mom was resting and didn't have any additional contractions for 3 hours so I decided to take her to the vet to have her checked, thinking she may be tired and unable to deliver the last pup. The vet did an x-ray, vaginal exam and said she was finished delivering that it must of been a placenta. He gave her a shot of oxytocin and sent us home. Has this ever happened to someone? It clearly looked like a head. I have been watching her and looking for her to expel the last placenta and haven't seen it although I may have missed it if mommy was quick. I suppose thinking about this, a puppy would be in a placenta and most likely would be a lump not a ball form. Thanks Karen |

| Lump after delivery A lot of times I can feel the lump or mass. The uterus still contracts for a while and it will feel just like a puppy. I usually just wait to see if there are any more contractions. Usually it softens up after a few hours. Even my vets have been fooled by it.

| Congratulations on your new litter. What you were feeling was the uterus contracting. After all the pups are delivered the uterus will continue to contract in order to expel any retained afterbirth. The uterus will get really hard during a contraction then it will relax.

| Thank You!! You were right, the placenta must of softened. I checked again hours later and it is gone. I have never experienced this before. Thanks Karen |
