Sophies pups are 10 days old..some advice I have a couple of questions. Sophie had 4 pups 10 days ago and they are doing very well... gaining about an ounce a day. The 3 girls were about 3 ounces at birth and the boy was 5. He is up to 14 ounces already, and the girls are 9 ounces. My question is that mom does not want to drink much water and i am worried about her being able to continue to Make milk if she is not drinking. Any suggestions on how to get her to drink more? She is eating well. I have been grinding up puppy food and mixing in a little cottage cheese, yogurt, and shred a little bit of chicken in the mix. Is this a good meal for her? She seems to really enjoy it. Also, She seems to be very good at taking care of the babies, but at night we have a hard time getting her to want to be with them. She wants to be in our bed. We have tried all kinds of things.. having the box next to the bed, moving the box with Sophie in another room ( this made her crazy .. but not matter what we do she is very torn between her puppies and sleeping with us.

Just make sure she has water available at all times, if she is thirsty she will drink. She is also getting liquid from the yogurt and cottage cheese. I always give my nursing mother cottage cheese and a half of a bolied egtg twice a day.

I agree with JeanieK that she is probably getting water from the foods you are feeding her. Personally, I just give my nursing mommas a good quality dry puppy food (Chicken Soup and Canidae) mixed with some canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food. I just make sure mine have plenty of food available at all times. I especially make sure they eat at bedtime. I give them 1/2 of a Doc Roy's Healthy Bones tablet twice a day. You can tell if the momma is getting enough fluids by looking at her urine. If she pees on a white pee pad and the urine is dark then that is a sign of dehydration. Keep in mind also, she is probably still stimulating the puppies to make them pee and she is getting that liquid also. If you feel she is not getting enough liquid then you could offer her some pedialyte. Good luck with your babies.
