| Has anyone ever had this happen before? My female Cookie just had her first litter of puppies this morning, She had one little girl puppy. Well mom and puppy are doing great. But she WILL NOT feed the baby on her own She stays with me at ALL times and will notfeed her puppy unless I put her in the box and sit there beside her, well I didn't mind doing that and I just figured it was because this was her first puppy, but I was sitting there waiting for the baby to finish eating and it stopped eating and crawled up between her 2 front legs and all of a sudden she jumped up and attacked the puppy I stuck my hand down there and she stopped but I thought she was going to kill it, she starts looking at it like it is a mouse or something she wants to kill and the she goes for it (but she doesn't hurt it if it stays down near her teats, she only bites her if she craws near her chest or head) She will stay with me and if I go in the room where the puppy is being kept she will sit there and watch it but won't get in the box with it Do any experienced breeders know why she is doing this? I guess I will just lose a few weeks of sleep. I will be sitting up and watching the feedings as I don't want her to harm the puppy

| Some mothers have been known to kill their pups, you are doing the right thing by supervising at feedings, you may have to keep the pup in a warm box between feedings and also diaper if mom is not. Mom will get her maternal instincts after nursing for a while. Hope it works out for you. Congrats. |

| congratulations on your new puppy. i've never had that problem, but I hope yhou are able to get it worked out and she learns to accept it. How old is the mother? If she is young, that might be the problem. |

No the mom is 2 years old and she seemed mentally and phsyically ready to have puppies to me or I wouldn't have bred her. The only thing I guess it could be is because this is her first litter.

| Try not to worry too much, just keep your eye on them for safety sake. She just had this baby so give her a little time, frequent feedings should help. Before you know it she will be bonding and protective. Seems every litter we have there is something to keep us on our toes. |

| Congratulations on the new puppy. I pray she does well. Is the momma licking and cleaning her? You have to make sure that she does so the baby will pee and potty. If the momma is not licking her then you will have to stimulate the puppy. |

| I am sorry you are having so much trouble. Hopefully the hormones will kick in soon and she'll take on the mother role. Until that happens I guess you will just have to keep watch.

| Thank you all! Yes mama is licking her when she feeds her but if the puppy comes to her is when she starts acting funny. If she doesn't stimulate the puppy I will take over. I was and am well prepared!! She seems to be doing good her little tummy is nice and fat after every feeding, and she pees after every feeding and poo'd 2 times today, so everything is going well except for mama's little "problem". I am keeping track of her weight and so far so good! Here are some pictures of her I also posted them in the YT nursery!

| I just went through that .In fact I slept on the floor the first night because Lola refused to sleep in the whelp box with her puppy. She would often growl at him when he got close to her face or butt area. Everytime he would try to nurse she would either turn her face or ignore him completely. She would walk out of the box with him haniging off her nipple !She didnt even lick him at all for 2 days. I had to do it with a moist cotton ball. The third night I was on the floor sleeping for an hour and Lola woke me up panting and digging. She never went into labor because she had an emergency C-section. Well she went through the "fake labor" and that lasted a few hrs. Finally early in that morning it's like she woke upfrom a coma! In a second she just started licking and licking the puppy like crazy and she kept throwing herself on her back so the puppy could nurse. Now she doesnt leave the puppy unless she needs to potty. She wont even get out of the box to eat. I have to hand feed her and slowly show her the bowl but she'll only eat in her box. Give Cookie a few days. Her hormones may need to kick in. I thought Lola would be a bad mom after the first 2 days but right now she's been amazing with the puppy. I know how you feel . I felt like OMG am I going to have to sit here at every feeding holding the puppy on her nipple? lol My back was killing me! lol How much did the little girl weigh? Genie |
