After taking Joey to his breeder, she felt like the Petipaws was not getting the nails short enough. Seeing her clip the nails, while he experienced absolutely no discomfort made me rethink my efforts. She explained that as the nails grow so does the quick, and just keeping the nails too long for a week or so, enables the quick to grow longer and longer each time. If nails are kept too long the whole foot can spread. She had to cut the nail to the quick on each nail. Amazingly, Joey didn't flinch or whimper when she did this and it did draw blood. She explained that just like the Peti-paws, it's important how you hold the nail, and it must be held firmly before cutting, this wiggling action of the nail is what causes the pain, not cutting the quick. If I had not witnessed this with my own eyes I would have not believed it.

A month after I saw the breeder, I decided to try to cut Joeys nails with regular clippers with the safety latch, I was able to cut all the front paws, and was careful about holding the nail firmly. No bleeding and the nails are nice and short. It was nerve racking, but one thing that did help was wrapping Joey in a towel, and just holding one paw out.

Anybody want to buy a used Peti-paws?

Already bought one and my Sasha is scared to death of it. I could never cut her nails at home. Im to scared so i guess im stuck paying the $13.00 at the vet lol. I dont even have to cut the thing on. just pulling it out is enough. She runs to the corner and curls up in a ball its actually kinda cute

Thats quite interesting about the quick growing longer if the nails aren't short enough. A bit of a lose lose situation lol. I must admit the nail thing is the scariest aspect of owning a furbaby.I file Tias once a week with an electric nail file for humans, they could be shorter but I once cut the quick with clippers and my poor baby was bleeding all over the place, well it seemed like it. She wasn't in pain , or even notice but it was a sight me running around after her with a bag of flour lol never again. You couldn't see the floor for flour.Hubby came in and thought I was baking a cake lol

Clipping the Nails

I, too, purchased a Pedipaws and have to say.." MY 3
YORKIES hate it!!!" So, rather than stress myself and them out.....its to the Vet to clip their nails.

On Clipping nails...

I also wanted to point out.... My Yorkies will let everyone else touch their nails...EXCEPT ME! They know they control me, I don't control them My Vet has told me to "take control"...well easier said than done with these Terriers, even wrapping in the towel is a challenge in our house.

grooming arm made it possible

i finally purchased a grooming arm with a "noose" for my little one's neck. if you've seen the dog whisperer with an unruley dog...i string her up higher on the neck....and i get it done. it is possible! she's a wildcat otherwise. and i gave up the pedipaws. just went with the guillotine nail trimmer.

Cutting Sara Jane's nails

That is what I do too. I "string her up" and can do the back nails that way. But the front feet are a different story. The last time, I discovered if I lay her on her back I can actually cut the front nails without her protesting too much. Something I hope to remember.

Yes, I have known that the longer you let the nails grow, the longer the quick grows. A very good reason to clip the nails more often, as much torture as it may be.
