Choking?

Posted 04-16-2008 at 07:50 PM by Beabble
A few days ago Maggy started making this noise, kinda like she was trying to get something unstuck out of her throat, I opened her mouth and checked in there with my fingers and there was nothing in there. I had been sitting on my bed with her as well so I know she didn't get into anything. Last that day she was in her kennel and did the same thing, then today when I had her outside playing, she did it out in the yard as well. She had been running and playing and I half wonder if this is because she gets to worked up and over excited? I've NEVER had a collar on her, only a harness and one that doesn't touch her neck at that, so I don't really think it could be a collapsed trachea. Going to keep a good eye on things and see if this goes away or continues to go on. She's been through so much already I just pray there isn't another thing wrong with her. When this happens, I always check her mouth and throat and never find anything in there, so I hold her close and pat her back and tell her it's ok, calm down, take it easy girl and she calms down then is fine.

Search YT or google for reverse sneezing. It's harmless and common.

Yep, I had done a search on it yesterday and actually reposted what I had found out about it, hopefully it helps to educate others about it as well. Sure did scare me to goodness when Maggy May did it! I feel lots better knowing it's basically harmless now

You're so smart. Good for you. I agree, it can be terrifying. I'm still not 100 percent sure that what my guy has is a reverse sneezing or if it could be trachea. Ugh.

I'm keeping a real good eye on Maggy May, if I feel it's getting worse and it happens more frequently, I'll be headed to the vet with her. Is your babies getting better or worse? I've never researched collapsed tracheas but I'm going to cause I wanna know the signs and symptoms of that as well. Let me know how your furbaby is doing, I hope it's just reversed sneezing and not anything serious.

It seems to come and go. Maybe springtime? Allergies? He's been worse than usual lately.

I'm frustrated because I've asked my vet, and he says, not having witnessed the attack himself, he has no way of knowing. And the symptoms are similar.

But he tells me that no matter which it is, there's nothing he would recommend doing about it at this early stage. I think a surgery for tracheal problems is a last resort.

I think there's a test (MRI ?) they can do, but it's hit and miss on whether they can catch the problem. It has to be taken the nanosecond the dog exhales, and there's no guarantee they'll capture that moment.

I can't remember if I told you this: One thing I've read you can do to temporarily ease the symptoms of reverse sneezing is to get them to swallow. I do this by putting a finger in his mouth. It actually seems to work.

You know, the first time it happened to Maggy may, I thought she was choking, I stuck my finger in her mouth and found nothing so I actually put my finger in her throat a lil, of course that gagged her, but as soon as I took my finger out, she stopped, lol. I know that sounds terrible but I believe what your saying about putting your finger in your furbabies mouth made it stop. I don't think I'd be comfy with the way your vet is handling this, I mean, specially since he hasn't witnessed it. Do you have a digital camera that records video and sound? If so, maybe you could shoot a short video clip of her doing this and then take it to your vet ad show him, perhaps him seeing it happening would make him think differently? If not, I'd go to another vet and get a second opinion.

That's a great idea. I did record the sound on my ipod, but he couldn't tell. I didn't think of a video. I'm going to do that.

That's actually what I had thought about doing and posting here to see if someone could tell me if it was reverse sneezing that Maggy May was doing. Maggy started to do it today again while playing with Luke (my daughters baby boy chihuahua.) When Maggy started to do it, I grabbed her up and made her settle down cause they had been playing pretty hard. I put her back in her kennel for a lil rest and she was fine. Let me know if you shoot a video clip of her doing it, I'd like to see it if you post it and compare it to what Maggy May does. Give your lil one a lil kiss and snuggle for me and tell him or her they've gotta stop scaring their Momma like that ;-)

Ooh, another good idea. Now the hard part will be having the camera handy for his next attack.

One correction, though:

Give your lil one a lil kiss and snuggle for me and tell him or her they've gotta stop scaring their DADDY like that ;-)

I'm a dude.

Ha ha. Considering I'm one of about 4 guys amid thousands of women, you're forgiven. I could easily make that apparent in my avatar, but I like tricking people.

ROFL!!! Well ya totally tricked me that's for sure, lol. Wonder how many other of the ladies will make the same mistake I did? I don't know why I just always assume it's a woman that I reply to, I guess I best start getting to know the YT members and not just assume they're all ladies, lol.
