Breakaway collars~Would this be a good idea? I don't keep collars on my dogs because I am afraid they will accidentally hang themselves/choke while I am not home. We've seen it on this board and another board in the past, members that sadly lose their babies for this reason. My maltese is a climber, she climbs the gate and gets into things occasionally so I just don't do it. BUT I am very afraid that they might get away accidentally and they won't have any tags on them. I really want them to be able to wear a collar with ID tags. SO I saw where I can purchase some breakaway clasps for collars and I was thinking that I would make my girls some breakaway collars in cute fabrics to wear on an everyday basis with their ID tags. That way if they ever get caught, the collar would snap open and they would be ok. Do you think this is something that I should sell on my site as well? Is there an interest for it?? |
I used to have these on my Yorkies w/ a simple tiny ID tag attached to it that I could always replace if need me for next to nothing. I just always used cat collars. Most of them are break away collars nowadays that you can just pick up at PetSmart. |

ha ha, still a great idea! Seriously, run over to a PetSmart or PetCo and look at how they've got them made. They usually come w/ a bell attached as well so you can hear your little critter running around. If you think you could improve on them, especially w/ the color/design of the fabrics let me know! |
I haven't ever used a breakaway collar on Lacy. Up Country makes dog and cat collars from all types of ribbons. Here is a link to their cat collars http://www.upcountryinc.com/prodtemp...lection&do=div They are all breakaway collars. you can click on the collection link to see all the colors and patterns. If you're able to make some really cute breakaway collars out of fabric, I'm sure you would sell some on your website. |
I think it's a great idea for you to sell them on your site. I looked all over for them when I got Eddie, and the only ones I found were for cats. And I didn't like how they looked. That said, I'm not sure I'd use a breakaway collar. The only reason I use a collar is to hang his tags on. If he gets lost, I want the tags on him. Who's to say the breakaway collar is not going to break away prematurely? Then he's lost his tags. Of course, I've heard the horror stories about dogs hanging themselves. But my feeling is that's rare. I'd rather take what I think is a miniscule chance of that than risk what is more likely. |
I tried using break away cat collars on mine but they came off all the time, all they had to do was rub them on the floor for a bit and they would pop right open. I use regular clip dog collars on them now, its my opinion that usually when dogs get them caught on things its because the collars are too loose. Fitted correctly I can't see how they would get caught on anything. |
Jodi -- As one sewer to another -- I think the addition of a collar with a break-a-way buckle will be a fantastic addition to your site. Making a "safe" collar to match the beautiful clothes you make would be ideal! |
I love the idea. I would like to keep collars on mine 24/7 keep us updated. |
I would be interested! I use breakaway collars from KeepSafe but they are only available in a few colors and they are pretty blah looking. |
Zoey got her collar caught on the baby gate once. It was a breakaway and worked perfectly.(I posted pics of how it happened on YT) If I find a collar that I like, I buy it, then have to convert it to breakaway with some findings I bought online. It seems they only come in cat collars most of the time. I think it is a great idea for your site! I would be a customer for sure! |
I researched the breakaway collars for cats and they need 10 pounds of pressure to release. Would these work for out smaller dogs? |
We have cats and there is also another version of collars out there too in case anyone was wondering and chloeandj you may even be able to make these too I don't know. It has a small rubberband in the collar, like the collar is split with a rubberband holding the two ends together so that it can fairly easily stretch open. I haven't looked but I would think that they wouldn't need as much weight to open plus for the dog who rubs his head on the ground I don't think it would pop open. Our cats and they are pretty big so weight has never been an issue therefore I've never looked into it. The only thing I wonder chloeandj, and don't think I'm lawsuit happy in saying this, is would you hold any liability if they didn't work properly. I'm not a seller so I don't know anything about that kind of issue but maybe its one to think about when considering something like this. Other than that I think you could really sell them. I've been keeping a collar on Reagan for a week now b/c I have a trip coming up and I want tags on her for that. I think a lot of people would like them for tags. |

Do you think you could make something like the attached picture? I think they are made of silk or satin and are asian designs. I especially love the red one and the black one. I have been looking everywhere but I cannot find any made with a breakaway clasp. If not, does anyone know where I can get one? I REALLY love these. |

I actually have that red asian fabric, I'd be happy to make you one. I'm going to reasearch the clasps a little bit more so it might be a week or two if that's ok. |

I have spent all morning looking for one and had just about given up! Yes, she can wait a week or two. She actually has on her spare one right now which is just a pale pink but a Diva like her needs something with more flare. Just PM when you are ready. I will most likely order one for Dixie as well if that's okay. Thank you so much! |
I dont think they have to weigh 10lbs to exert 10lbs worth of pressure on the clasp. I got my breakaway at Walmart for $2.97. It is a kitten collar. When they get caught and struggle, it is enough pressure to open the clasp. Zoey only weighed 3 lbs and hers popped right open when she was caught. I dont think they would make kitten colars that wont open easily because there arent many 10lb kittens. |
Oh, how I would LOVE a breakaway collar for each of my girls:) I find that the kitty ones are too large for Luna, she's so widdle:p Plus they'd be so much cuter with you making them. Please PM me when you are ready to go on these, please?:D |

The kitty ones are too big for Zoey too. I have to cut them off and restitch. I cant wait to see the ones from this thread. Im sure they are gonna be great! |

Mine don't wear them, but you know I would buy just about anything from you, and I would like for Bear & Mac to start wearing them cause Bear darts out the door sometimes and I would rather them have collars on than not....Bear said to let you know also that he isn't a cat and don't want to wear one of those silly cat collars.... :D |
Have you made any of these yet Jodi? |
I was talking to Cindy (Chattiesmom) and she mentioned that she makes these already, which I wasn't aware of. I love Cindy's work and since she already knows what's she's doing and does such a great job, I'm going to have Cindy make me a few instead of me making them. She makes them in silk and charges $7.50 which includes shipping, that's a darn good deal! drawlins27, I will be sending some red brocade fabric to Cindy to make me one out of that fabric, i'll send her some extra and you can contact her about making one for you too out of that fabric. i hope that sounds ok. :) Jodi |
I had bought a break-away collar for Sadie. It has like a peice of elastic that holds the collar together. I have used it for training purposes...I just wonder though, how hard they would have to pull to break the collar also, if they even could break the collar being that they are so small. My daughter bought a collar for her kitten (break-away) and it was too big for her little neck. I tried to take it off and had a heck of a time trying to "break" it. Made me wonder if it would have "broken away". |
I didn't know she made these thanks. I will contact her. Quote:
