Ruffling attachment Okay, to all you women who sew and have ever made a ruffle by hand, you know that it can be, well, a pain in the arse. I learned to sew from my grandma, and she taught me to make ruffles using a 4 step process. 1. Sew a loose basting stitch 2. Tie off one end and gather your ruffles, hoping you get them evenly spaced and have enough ruffle. 3. Stitch over the top of the ruffle to "keep it in place". 4. Stitch the ruffle to your material. I learned later in life to combine steps 3 and 4 into one step, but it still made ruffles a time consuming and daunting task. I bought an attachment for my machine today that ruffles the material for you. Automatically. You set it to make a ruffle every so many stitches and it kicks this little foot down and gathers the material and makes your ruffle. It took me all of 10 minutes to not only make a ruffle but to combine it onto my material, because you can do that as well! Best $80.00 I have EVER spent!!! If your machine has one available, I highly recommend it! I put a ruffle on the organizer I am finishing up and also tried my hand at cording (much harder than the ruffle and needs some practice) but I will post a picture tomorrow to show the ruffle and the attachment as well. Can I just say that I am in love with my new machine and really am enjoying sewing new things and branching out???? Get a ruffling attachment! Lol |
Picture of the ruffle. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...6C4FEFFA03.jpg I'll get a picture of the actual attachment and post it later |
A ruffler came with my treadle machine, from 1896! I never saw one till last year, lol! My Mom taught me, but she either never had attachments to her machines, or never used them. The freaky thing is the old one I use looks just like the newer ones, lol, just a few differences to allow you to control what is does better. Happy ruffling!:D |
Awesome!! My machine has a ruffle attachment and I have never used it...I do it the way my mom taught me, which is like the way your Grandma taught you, Michelle. I need to get over my fear of the attachments I have never used on my machine and experiment:D Love that fabric in your pic!! |
Wow! That is so cool! I've never heard of a ruffle attachment but you can bet I'll be checking into that. Your project looks great! You'll have to share the finished product with us. Thanks for sharing the info about that neat attachment too! :) |
ha ha... I think I have a ruffler (I love gagets) and I also think I have a gaget that helps with making cords.. I tend to do it the old fashion way, the way my grandma showed me. I guess I have to stop buy gagets and use them:D |
My Grandmother taught me too. Oh the ruffle attachment rocks. Depends on the machine you have some machines have a ton of different attachments and feet. Buttonhole one is really nice too. Never have to do it by hand again. And seam feet oh I loave them have a few different sizes. I miss sewing. I just do not have anywhere to set myself up. It looks great. I hope you share your finished project. |
sweet thanks for sharing imma gonna see what my machine came with!! i always do it manually as well. |

Mine has the cording attachment and a ruching attachment too...never used either of them. The only attachments I really use a lot are the buttonhole attachment and the walking foot attachment. |

I hated button holes before. My machine will even sew ON a button. Crazy! |

I would love to learn ruching too. Its so pretty! The only thing I can say on the ruffler is go slow until you get the hang of it. The presser foot doesnt go down tight on the teeth, so my material wanted to pull a little, and with it being a rather large attachment, its hard to see your seam marks on your plate. And it jerks when the ruffler kicks the material under to ruffle it. |
Sound like your sewing projects will be going a lot faster with your new ruffle attachment for your sewing machine. That photo of the ruffle looks very professional and nice, great job! |

I use my zipper foot to sew close to anything, like attaching piping and stuff. |

Attachment 374683 On this dress, the band is all puffing, and the two ruffles at the bottom of the skirt and the top of the skirt were gathered with a ruffler attachment. Attachment 374684 You can see the top edge skirt gathers better on this dress, also done with a ruffler attachment. |
