Ouch! Seamstress Down!!! Well I've had my first sewing injury! I'm having to type only with my left hand. I cut out the fabric for my next project this afternoon. I was pressing everything with my iron when it happened.... Somehow the iron slipped and I caught the entire hot plate (by accident mind you) with the palm side of my right hand! I literally started crying! My hand feels like it is on fire. I've been icing it on and off all evening. I have burn cream that I'm applying and I pray it gets better. I want to sew!!!:( |
Oh my Aymee are you sure you don't need to go have that checked out:eek: I can imagine the pain you are in:( I hope it heals fast!! {{hugs}} |
Sewing can be hazardous:D. Have you gotten your finger with the needle yet? :D. Hang in, and heal quickly, then keep up the good sewing job - KS deserves to be the Yorkie Fashion Queen and needs you back in creative mode! |
Thanks guys! I think it's going to be ok. I think it is only a minor burn, but it still burns like all get out! I've been doing 15 minutes on/off with ice packs. The burning sensation is getting milder, but it still is enough to drive me nuts! I hope the burning is gone tomorrow. I'm putting this special no scar burn cream on there that has moisturizers in it. I had the iron on medium low, thank goodness I didn't have it on high!!! And yes...I've already poked myself several times with the needle! Y'all didn't tell me this sewing was so hazardous! ;) |

We must be related cuz strangely I did the exact same thing a last month (I wasn't sewing though)...and OUCHHHHHHH - I cried too, infact I cringed reading this....I will tell you that I filled up a bowl of water put 2 ice trays in it and let it soak for 15 mins and out 15 mins - for about 2 hours IT WORKS..I didn't get a horrid painful blister, it was burned and red but hard almost like scaley..no blister...good luck and sorry your having one of my nights...:):) p.s. I cracked up when I read title of thread!! |
OH, my god girl you are not allow to get hurt, so sorry, I sewed thru my finger once.. and it hurt A LOT... be careful and take care of that hand.. you will be like new in not time... hugs, |
I'm so sorry Aymee that you are hurt...but you do it all for KS to be beautiful! Oh the wonder worlds of our yorkies and the things we do for them! LOL |
aloe, it will cool it faster and heal it faster, you'll have to learn to sew with your other hand, like all of us crafty, sewing people. that way no matter what you do you can still operate the sewing machine. |
Your local pharmacy should carry burn cream. It has zinc in it and will help your skin heal. |
Oh no! I agree, submerging your hand in a bowl of iced cold water will work better.... I poured boiling water straight from the tea kettle over my hand once... I slept with my hand in the bowl all that night... very painful. I try to think what I'll do the next time my iron takes a dive...scared to death it may fall on one of my cats or dogs, so I'm planning on grabbing the cord, just to keep it from hitting the floor or anything too hard. Hope you feel better soon... |
Aymee, I heard the craziest remedy for a burn. Use egg whites every day. |
Hey guys! Thanks for all of your advice and well wishes! I am about to go and get a bowl of ice water. My hand is already much better just icing it on and off all evening. I am up super late, but just can't sleep. KS has been consoling me all night. It is amazing how these little guys can read us and know when to comfort us. She has made me feel much better. I am hoping the sewing can continue tomorrow. ;) |
You poor girl! Burns are so terribly painful. I hope the bowl of ice water helps keep the pain down. There is a burn salve that works well, but it's a prescription. Get well wishes to you. Tonight when I was sewing, I stabbed my finger with the seam ripper. It hurt, but not near the hurt you're having to endure. Hugs to you. |
Oh gosh! I hope you feel better soon Aymee! I spoke too early when I told DH that I hadn't hurt myself. I purchased some very, very sharp scissors the other day. Well.....word to the wise.....don't cut fabric on your bed, and realizing the sharpness of the scissors is a must. Not only did I slice my finger, but I cut a hole in our comforter. :p Just gives me an excuse to redecorate! |
oh boy i hope your feeling better today aymee. lets say my sewing went really bad!! haha. i had to start over three times. i think i finally understand the pattern and how to put it together....well see going back to it tonight. =*(()) hope you recover soon!! |
I got tired of my iron falling of of the ironing board so I put the hard plastic mouse pad to the kids super nintendo on my ironing board and sit the iron on that, the kids never used the mouse pad anyway. My iron stays very nicely on the board now and never falls off. I guess a small piece of plywood would work. I hope that you are feeling better today. Be sure to get to a Dr if any signs of infection set in. |
Eek, that hurts just thinking about it!!!! Hope its feeling better today & heals fast. |
Ouch!! Burns reallllly hurt... I cannot imagine the entire palm of your hand being burnt :( Hope it heals quickly! |
Thanks you guys! I have it bandaged today and it's much better. I have been using it pretty well, but it is weird to try and work all bandaged up. LOL |
Here's a sewing tip (from Martha): Get a wooden cuticle pusher stick at the drugstore, and use that to help guide the material under the needle. They are helpful when you accidentally run over a pin halfway and it gets stuck under the pressure foot... So glad you're feeling better today!:D |
Ouchie...makes me hurt to think about it too. Burns are so very painful:( Glad it's feeling better and not hindering your sewing ;) Just take care of your hand! |
I love the title of this thread, it just made me laugh when I first saw it! I didn't laugh when I read what happened but the title just cracked me up...I remember when you first started all the sewing...just looked at one of your new threads and oh my "You've come a long way baby"!!! |
I had a log that was glowing red, roll out of my fireplace and go airborn, heading for the carpeted den floor (this has been years ago)....I could only thing of one thing to do to keep it from setting the carpet on fire......I doubled up my fist and "volly ball lik batted that glowing red log back up into the fireplace!Of course, some of the glowing red embers were STUCK to my hand....and it took a while for the magnitude of the pain I was in, to reach my brain....at which point in time, I instinctively wiped the red hot ember off using my right leg.....smart cookie!! You will not believe this, but I slathered Vicks VapoRub all over my burned fist and my right thigh area that I burned.....the unbelieveable pain/burning/throbbing stopped immediately, and by the next morning neither site was evn red! I am looking at my hand now, and I am stunned and amazed that you can not even tell it was ever burned! I keep jarsd and jars of Vicks at the house now....that stuff is good for ANYTHING!!!! |
Yorkiemom1...first I have to apologize because I am laughing like crazy...I can picture that log being volleyed back into the fireplace and the look of determination on your face that the carpet was not going to get burnt...for some reason...I can't quit laughing! |
I am glad you are feeling better. If you have pure lavender essential oil, you can put that on by itself when you burn yourself. I use it on burns from the oven or iron. It helps a lot and smells good while healing |
