Question for you guys on clothes... How did you guys get your babies used to wearing clothes? I only have bought one little dress for Katie Scarlett (she's almost 15 weeks) to try out, but every time we put it on she bites at it and will pull it off if I don't step in and distract her. The dress we got is a very soft material. It has fur on the end and I double checked to make sure nothing was poking her like a tag or anything. I don't know if she is just wanting to get at the fur trim or if she wants the dress off. I would LOVE for her be able to wear cute little outfits from time to time if possible, but I am at a loss on how to get her to wear them???? I do praise her and tell her how pretty she is each time I put the dress on. I would give treats but so far we haven't found any treats that she likes. She just sniffs at them, maybe chew at it for a second, and spits it out. She will not eat them. Help! Should I just give up and accept she doesn't like clothes or should I be persistant and let her wear them for just a bit every day? Any tips? Will she get better at dressing as she gets older? I starting putting clothes on Callie as soon as I got her and they never seemed to bother her and she loves them now and almost freezes with out them unless its outside in summer. Have you tried putting it on and distracting with her kong or a toy? About the treats have you tried old mother hubbard puppy treats? I got Callie those when she was a puppy and would not eat any treats. Also have you tried regular cheerios? |
Maybe when you put the clothes on her give her a treat right after also and make it like she did something amazing. Like you would in training and pottying where she's supposed to. That might help reenforce it as a good thing and also distract her at the same time. You could also try starting her with little shirts and sweaters and stuff. It might not be clothes in general but more the bulkiness of a dress. I got both my pups in the winter time of the year so I was lucky seeing as they wanted their sweaters and jackets on when we went outside now that it's that time of year again they rush and practically put their sweaters and jackets on for me lol. |
Sorry I missed the part about the treats in your original post. Have you tried Bill Jacks treats? I buy the ones in a purple bag with a yorkie on the front from Petsmart. My male was really picky when he was little about treats also but went crazy for them and still does. They're his favorite treat also their small and softer so it's easy for them to eat. |
When I first started putting clothes on Kiko (she was around 5-6 months), I would put a shirt on her and then get her interested in playing with her favorite toy or going for a walk, so she was too busy to pay much attention to what she was wearing. She still does not not like the leg loops that are on some sweaters, even though she will wear jammies with legs, so I just don't put her legs through the loops. Maybe trying a simple t-shirt with no embellishments until she gets used to clothes would help. |

Kayla does the same thing. SHe hates clothes. I think starting them out when they are little and slowly but surely they get use to them. I lucked out with Dudley. Naturally the boy would be good and my little girl a toot. You can put anything on him, clothes, bows anything and he is so good and will wear anything. Wouldn't you know? I started putting Riley in tshirts as soon as I brought him home. He never seemed to mind.... I know some of my friends' dogs just Hate clothes so they don't put them in them.... Perhaps after putting something on her you can distract her with the Hide-A-Squirrel.... I know that is Riley's favorite and would more than likely distract him if he was pulling and tugging at his clothes. :) Hope this helps!! ;) |
I agree; start with shirts or dresses that don't have things attached to them. When we got Bella she actually pulled a few off the 1st few times she wore them. I swore no more until she got older because I sure didn't want her choking on one :eek: |
Preemie onesies might be too big for the op's pup. My 7-8lb baby wears preemies sizes. I do agree with starting with something simple. A tiny tee, with sleeves, or some tiny jammies. Others might not agree, but don't spend large amounts on custom items for her. She has A LOT of growing to do, and will quickly outgrow her cute outfits. I didn't get Kaji anything custom made until 18 months and he still outgrew them. :rolleyes: |
I started with clothes right away too! I think the same as others have said, a little soft t shirt to start and treats just like you are doing:) |
Thank you all so much for your advice! I will give all of your tips a try. We just bought the Bil Jac treats the other day and she showed a little interest. I am wondering if I cut them into smaller pieces if that would help? We are going to try Cheerios this week. I need to get a plain little shirt for her to try. You guys are the best! I really appreciate your help! |
Yes, cut the Bil-Jac treats into halves and then cut them again. Make them tiny! Or buy Bil-Jac JAX which are already teeny tiny treats for training. They are in the purple bag with a Yorkie on front as someone said before. Clothes? Repetition, repetition. Repetition. If she takes the dress off, put it back on and use a calm voice. No excitement in your voice. I give my dresses a name, usually dress, so she knows what it is. When she gets older if she is like mine, I can say dress, or Halloween dress, or Valentine's dress, and all the girls line up waiting for theirs to be put on. So cute. |
We bought Bailey bill jacks when she was a puppy, sniffed them... then chewed... then spit. Hated them. She loved the bacon strip things, but now... she will eat anything. And the day after we got her, she had clothes on:) Didn't care. Don't give up! Show her whose boss;) |
Mina wears dresses every day and nighties every night. I make getting dressed a game that we play. She wrestles around and when she is done,she is dressed. Then it is time for breakfast or bed. She just doesnt know any different. I get dressed for the day then it is her turn, my hair gets fixed then it is her turn. |
