help!! lost momma dog My mom's Gracie was killed today the puppies are only 9 days old. Can someone let us know how to feed and take care of them. We know that they have to cleaned and warm. We are just devasted by this and need some help. Thank Mina |
Oh how tragic! I'm so sorry for the loss of Gracie:( I'm not a breeder, never had puppies of my own but I would guess you'll have to bottle feed them. The vet should have puppy formula to use. I know there are wonderfully great breeders on here who will be able to give better advice than me. Best of luck and sending prayers out. |
I am so sorry about your loss!! Yes warm and cleaned - stimulated to pee and poop everytime you feed them. There are many more experienced breeders here who I am sure will help a lot!! Do you have puppy formula and bottles - bottles with human premie nipples tend work really well. I know alot of people have issues with the ones made for animal babies. It is about 1 ml per ounce of weight spread out for the day. I am not sure how often to feed at this age - every two or three hours I think is a good rule of thumb. Your vet should be able to advise you and I do know you never want to feed them upright - on a firm surface with them on all fours is important. Like I said I am sure someone with more experience will give more advice!! I hope I helped a little and good luck with those babies!! |
I'm soo sorry! that's terrible. I would advise you to start a thread in the breeders section. They will help you. |
Oh, how very tragic! Please take the pups to the vet asap. Explain on the phone what happened and how old the pups are. They will show you exactly what to do with those poor little orphans in regard to their feeding and pottying. I hope your Mom doesn't have a job....these pups will need around the clock care for some time yet. I am so sorry for everyone's loss. I know she must be totally devestated and scared for the pups survival. She can do it, but it will take a lot of work. Hopefully there will be family or friends that will help her. Please let us know how the pups are doing. |
I am so very sorry about Gracie. I am sure there are plenty of people here who can assist you. Good luck with your babies. I would also post in the breeders section. They could certainly help. |

Keeping them clean and warm is a part of what you must do....Do you or does your vet have the bitches formula? Also I use a qtip and put it in warm water to stimulate them to pee pand poop by rubbing the qtip gently over both areas. This works great. I would keep them warm on some type of a heating pad. And feed them every two hours. I am so sorry for your loss of the mom and hope all goes well with you and keeping them alive. Prayers and thoughts are with you. |
that was so sweet of you,, i had chills just now... bless you |
What an offer! I sure hope she logs back on and sees your message....shows how much you truly care for all of our babies:) |
How heartbreaking about Gracie. Kimberly...that is so nice of you to offer help! I hope she comes back to find your post! Poor little orphans. |
I finelly got back sorry!! Thank you Kim!!! Right know everything is going good we took the puppies to the vet. Got bottles dont like the nipples so we are will get the premie nipples tomorrow. anything else you can help us with will be appriciated. thank you all for your kindness very ruff day for us all!! My mom doesn't work and my daughter and myself will be helping her. We work different shifts! please keep us in your prayers. |
Oh, I'm so glad you came back on. This site is going to be very helpful to you and your Mom. I am glad that she will have some help in this. How very sweet of you. Remember to never let them catch a chill or give them cold formula. I'm sure the vet explained the formula and stimulating necessities. Gosh, it is going to be a hard couple of weeks then things will balance out more. Remember to post with any concerns or share any accomplishments. Actually, every 2 hours that passes with nice healthy pups is a huge accomplishment! |
Glad you have everything under control...keep them warm... under the whelping bed place a heat pad (wrapped in a towel) ON LOW (not inside the bed) and only under half of the bed, also put a small stuffed animal and perhaps a soft wash cloth in so they have something to snuggle with. there are puppy nipples at the pet store, boil them for an hour to soften them...you can also use a eye dropped but its not as effective and you MUST be careful not to over do it, they can swallow too much and aspirate. puppies should be fed every 3-4 hours formula as well stimulate with warm damp cotton ball (pee/poo) after feeding also do not feed on their back only upright! Once you know their full tap them lightly on the back like you would a newborn baby to burp. this might help you http://debbiejensen.com/carepup.html all the best If you need anything dont hesitate to call |
all my best to you and your babies .... how very awful ... itz sad to lose a pet, but to lose a mom with new pups .... so much sadder ... Lotza people on here are very smart about breeding and taking care of pups ... use their wisdom ... u r in my thoughts .. Debbie |

I agree. I think it would be worth the trip if she is able to do this for you. It would be much better for the pups in so many ways. Good luck to you. |
I am so sorry for your family's loss. I have raised tiny kittens from just a few days old who lost their mom with no clue of what to do, only instinct, but never a puppy. I will keep you and the puppies in my thoughts and prayers. It sounds like they will have a good chance of making it with all the help you are getting from the people with experience here. God Bless you and your babies. |
How wonderful it is to log on this morning and see that you came back to update us (too many times, people come here for help/advise, then never come back to update us!). Kimberly and others have given some great advice to you which should help you in caring for those orphaned babies. I know the coming days and weeks will be hectic and busy for you while caring and raising them but please, if you can spare 5 minutes, please update us on their progress! We are all here for our love of yorkies and we are all here for the members in good times and bad. And if you can, we'd love to see pictures:) Nothing gets us going like seeing yorkie babies:) |
I am so sorry to hear that. You have been given great advise.Kim you are the best always willing to jump in and help.It is appreciated by all of us even if we do not need your assistance. Will be praying for you and your mom and babies. |
