New Yorkie and new to yorkies! 1 Attachment(s) Hi everyone! I am getting my first yorkie puppy on Tuesday. We have already named her Gracie. This pic is from the breeder. I would appreciate any tips and tricks from the veterans. Since I've never owned a yorkie before I'm a little nervous, but I just can't wait for her! I am in love with her already! |
Wello hello and Welcome to YT:)! Gracie is adorable! Congrats... I'm sure you can't wait until Tuesday. How old is she? I'm a New Yorker mom as well:D. I love it, wouldn't trade her for anything. Again welcome, you will find tons of info and some great friendly people here! |
Hi and Welcome to YT! :D Congratulations on your new baby! You'll find lots of information in the forums... and check out the puppy section of the YT Library, here: Puppy Care and Puppy Info Library - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community |
Thanks! Thanks for the link! She is 6 weeks |
Hello and welcome. You are getting your puppy at 6 weeks. That is way too young to gt a pup. She is not even weened at that age. It is recommended to have them stay to 12 weeks. I would strongly suggest talk to the breeder and ask her to keep you pup a few more weeks. Trust me on this you will be glad you did. |
I agree! I also think its too young. Everything I read about yorkies says 12 wks. I did speak to the breeder and if I don't take her next week, she has another couple waiting. I wish it were a better situation. |
Welcome! Your in the right place, especially since this is your first yorkie! I have gotten so much great info here. Your baby is adorable! |
Hello and welcome! It is illegal to sell a pup younger than eight weeks...does your 'breeder' realize this? Personally if the breeder wont keep her a few more weeks...JMO this breeder does not care about her pups...I would pass on her....please dont take this wrong I'm not bashing you in any way, I worry about the pup not being ready to leave her momma. This can cause problems in the future, will the breeder be willing to stand behind her pup? Gracie is adorable! Please be careful, you have come to the right place for information and support...we are truly yorkie/dog lovers here...she really is adorable. :) |
Concern I appreciate everyone's concern about the puppy's age. Trust me, I am also concerned and I do not agree with her selling the puppy that young. If I were a breeder, I would keep them until 12 weeks. However, I am not the breeder. If I do not take the puppy, she will just go to the other family. Either way this girl is leaving her mother at 6 weeks. I had a really hard time finding this puppy in my area. There were several puppy mills around Idaho that sell little 2 lb "teacups", but I did not believe that those dogs would be healthy and I don't really care to support puppy mills if there are other options. The pics I received of the litters with the mothers were quite bad. The mothers looked really rundown and unhealthy, as I am sure they were. So, I came across this lady that breeds her yorkies. She has one male and one female only and breeds once per year. She is just an old lady who probably doesn't know better. Maybe she does, I don't know. The parents look healthy, the condition of the puppies is much better than the puppy mills. There were also a couple of breeders who were charging huge fees for their puppies. I think it would be better to buy from them, but unfortunately I don't have the money to pay their fees. My husband and I are not rich. I also came across many scammers wanting to give me free or very cheap yorkies if I would just wire the airfare to them in Arizona. Those were my choices. I chose the old lady with the healthy looking puppies that I can afford. If anyone else who is a more responsible breeder would like to sell me a 12 week old puppy at a price I can afford, please send me a private message. Otherwise, I will be super happy to take Gracie. She definitely could have come from a more responsible breeder, no question there. She is leaving her mom at 6 weeks, which makes me sad. Unfortunately, she is leaving whether I take her or pass. However, I do know that I can help her through that transition. I have puppy formula from the veterinarian to help her get along until she is accustom to eating regular puppy food since she is freshly weaned. I have a puppy heating pad to help her with her body temp. I have taken some time off work to make sure she is taken care of. I am not sure the other family can offer her the same. |
Tammygirl... you are definitely trying to do the right thing... And if you have your vet beside you, helping get you through the first month, you will probably be ok. These babies are so sought after... you are right in that if you don't take the baby, someone else will. I also understand the Yorkietalk folks who are so vehemently opposed to taking pups from undesireable breeders... I hope your baby does well. You will likely have some health and behavioral issues from such an early weaning. But hold her close and love her, and know that she'll have the best life available to her. The same puppy that is shunned at the puppy mill is clamored for once it reaches Yorkie Rescue. The potential owner goes from devil to angel on the same pup just from the transfer. I understand it, but have no solution. God Bless and good luck. |

Paying more for a pup that has had health testing can cost you a lot less in the long run because this pup may look healthy but could have a genetic issue or luxatting patella. This pup should not be left alone for longer then an hour. This young she needs to eat every two hours and not doing this or expecting her to do it on her own could result in hypoglycemia and death if no one is around to help. I hope sense you are getting this pup so young and you have a job that you have some one to watch or check on this pup many times a day. |
We do! I think we are all set :) I have some time off work to be with her for a while, and between all of us at home, she will have somebody with her most of the time. She may be on her own for an hour or two when we all get back to work. I am pretty sure we have everything we need at this point, just waiting for tomorrow to bring her home! |

I'm Canadian, but I thought it was illegal in ALL states to sell a pup under 8wks!!?? I'm glad you are doing all you can for the well being of this baby and I pray all goes well for you. :) |
I don't like the excuse that if you don't take her someone else will. It's just trying to justify something you know is not right. You can take the pup or you cannot take the pup. The difference is you being a part of the sad never ending problem of too many puppies being bred and too many being put down every year, or you can walk away from it and be an advocate for these beautiful creatures by supporting reputable breeders and/or rescues. The fact that this woman is letting them go at 6 weeks tells she is just in it for extra money. I've heard it so many times when I ask why they let the puppies go at such a young age; They just wanted to get rid of them. They wanted them out of the house. They don't care about the well being of the dogs. That extra 6 weeks would help immeasurably in the development of the dog's future. |
No, it is not illegal in my state or the breeders state. The list can be found here Age to Sell Puppy Table |
Seriously, if the breeder is so horrible as to want the puppy out of her house, do you really think that's the best place for it to be?? I was am super excited to get my puppy and simply wanted to share my excitement with others on the board. That was a huge mistake on my part! I have read many posts on here from people who got their puppies from pet stores or Amish puppy mills and I wonder if they ha to go through the same bs. This is getting really old. |
I'm curious how reputable breeders justify charging $7,500 or more for a litter of puppies even with genetic testing. The math just doesn't add up. Who's in it for money? |

Most of us here got our yorkies from less than reputable people, myself included. We've been though it and we're trying to keep new people from heartache. But if you've already made up your mind, so be it. there are others who read these threads, and as long as there's a chance I may change someones else's mind then it's worth my time to post here. God forbid an issue comes up with your pup, but regardless, we will be here to answer your questions. |

I got the puppy I could afford. I called "reputable" breeders to see if they could work with my budget. I was told sorry time and again. They did not care what type of life I could provide for the puppy, they didn't even ask once they realized I could not afford their fee. I checked the local rescue — Idaho Yorkie Rescue — ADOPTIONS —*RescueMe.Org who has one strange looking dog. So, I found one I could afford. I would have preferred getting one from a better place, but unfortunately that didn't work out. I posted here for any reputable breeders to pm me. No reply. I appreciate all of your concerns for my puppy. I have appreciated all of the tips. I am picking her up tomorrow. I understand we all have our opinions and feelings regarding where puppies come from, and I appreciate the differences. I will not be discussing my puppy's age anymore. I would like to share my experiences here with everyone else. If it offends anyone where I got my puppy or how old she is, please feel free not to converse with me. I'm ok with that. Otherwise, I look forward to raising my puppy and being able to ask questions, share photos, get advise, and hear everyone's stories. |

What a mess! We got a text from the breeder saying they were in their way. It's a 6 hour drive. We texted her to remind her to bring papers and records because that's a long drive. Originally she told me she was akc registered. Now, apparently she is apri registered but hasn't received the papers yet. Omg seriously! I told her to forget it so I will not be taking this puppy :( We did find a local breeder who has 10 week puppies. We will be looking at them in about 3 hours. I am do discouraged and disgusted with this whole process. I know eventually it will be worth it. We are good people and I know we would love and cherish out puppy and care for her to the best of our ability. I don't understand why it has to be so darn hard! |
