"Teacup" origin
 
The origin of the "teacup" title began in England. Wealthy families would breed these "teacup" yorkies, which under the guidelines for a teacup Yorkshire terrier, it had to, at full maturity, be able to fit under a standard British teacup. Therefore, according to those who began this amazing breed which came out of Yorkshire, England there is a teacup standard. However, this is not a standard that the AMERICAN Kennel Club recognizes.
Don't get me wrong, I am not condoning the breeding of super-tiny yorkies, however, at one time, it was standard practice in the birthplace of the Yorkshire Terrier.

To have a dog able to fit into a teacup would not be the intent of the original breeders as they desired a ratter. It would be hard to keep the textile mills free of rats when you're no bigger than one. It seems to me they are pushing for a yorkie that looks more and more like a chihuahua in coat all the time. If you look at the yorkies being shown in England and abroad you will notice that they are a bit bigger and more elegant than alot of what is being bred in this country.

ladyhawk, your right they do seem to be bigger over here. i know for showing max weight should be 7lb, but as for pets its really rare where i live to see a tiny yorkie.
I'm out and about with Buddy alot and virtually every yorkie we meet is pretty much Buddys size and he's 15lb!!! yet he's still been called a rat, and is definitely still a small dog (he's well proportioned :) )

Honestly imo too i have a hard time finding anything i like in a shelter..i know this sounds bad but when i am looking for a yorkie i want that pretty girl or boy with the long silky coat. not an older, sickly, rough looking verision of a yorkie. (please dont hate me) i havent seen any other adoption fees (here) under $450.00 for yorkies. again i understand the need but for another 150-200.00 i cant get a puppy with papers and no limitations or restrictions.

Wow $1000 is a LOT to adopt a dog from a rescue. I've seen $500 and have thought that was pretty high for an adoption...but I know rescues spend a lot of money on their dogs. It is a turn-off though when you can buy a new puppy from a breeder for just a little more than you could adopt one from a rescue.

I'm with you on the adoption though...I would LOVE to adopt a yorkie, but it seems like most of the ones I see are over standard, don't have a good coat...just pretty far from the yorkie standard. And I know it's selfish, but I can only have so many dogs and I want my yorkies to be pretty and well, standard yorkie-looking. If I ever do come across that "perfect" yorkie in a rescue though, then I'll probably adopt it.

Welcome to YT. By now I guess you know their are really no tea cups, but we lovingly call the bigger one's tea pots. LOL Hope you find what you're looking for on our site. Great breeders, great people.

The Standard reads 4-7 pounds and more!
 
Before you get one, do your research so you know what to look for. Go to AKC and read the standard!!! Know what the colors are supposed to be, the size, etc. You can also find links on this site to growth charts where you can maybe predict by a pup's growth pattern how big it will grow to be. I used one from this site and it seems to be pretty close. Yorkies in my area go for $500 - $800. This is southern Indiana. Just be careful, learn lots, and make a careful decision you will NEVER regret! Yorkies are the best!!!
