Looking for a small doll face yorkie in Southern California I am looking for a more doll face looking (shorter nose) & smaller size (preferably less than 4lbs when matured) yorkie baby as a pet in Southern California. (near Irvine, CA) There are a few things I would like to highlight: 1. I would like to visit the yorkie before deciding to take him/her home? (This is actually very important to me. I don't want to just pay for a baby yorkie by looking at the pictures in stead of seeing him/her in person.) 2. I'm still undecided on whether to get a male or female yorkshire terrier. I think the personality is much more important than the actual sex. Would you explain some of the most significant & obvious differences between a male & female yorkie to help me decide? 3. I indeed believe in the time & energy a breeder's put in breeding quality yorkies; nevertheless, I don't want to overpay. I can afford a price approximately $1000 for a yorkie that is really worth it. 4. Will the yorkie baby be vaccinated, dewormed, pad (litter) trained or introduced, & have health guaranteed before I take him/her home? Thank you for taking the time to read my long post. I am a newbie. It's just so exciting to find a forum full of yorkie lovers and cute yorkies. Wish you all the best! :) |
My advise is to learn all you can about the breed and what makes a reputable breeder, before you look at pups. It's very hard to walk away from a Yorkie and they are all cute puppies. Have you been to www.ytca.org ? You can learn about the breed standard there and perhaps start to understand why you may have difficulty finding a babydoll face, tiny dog from a reputable breeder. Most good breeders won't breed for that. Tiny dogs are born sometimes (same as larger ones) but they are in high demand. Most Yorkies in Southern CA from good breeders are close to $2,000. Pet shops and backyard breeders are closer to $1000. but there is more risk involved with buying from them. Specialty breeders (those breeding for tiny, babydoll face) usually charge more than everyone and as I said, it's hard to find someone reputable. Take your time, learn about the breed and breeders. Find a breeder you trust and get on a waiting list. You may find a cheaper puppy but if it isn't healthy, it will cost you more in the long run. Good luck |
Shelby'sMom~, thank you for the information. & the website you provided was extremely helpful. I've done a lot of research, but it just seems that it's never enough & there's always more to know! (therefore, I'm SOOOOOOO~ HAPPY~~~ when I found this forum) People here are all so nice :) |
Hi, DooDoo, I am basically looking for the same dog. Short snout, under 4lbs when matured in Southern California area. Tell me if you find anything. Whatever you do, just don't buy from Wee-R-Yorkies in Lake Forest, that's where I got Lucky from. The lady there doesn't care about her dogs after they're sold. |
If you're looking for that kind of dog for about $1000, you're going to have to look outside of California. And even so, it'll be a little bit more than just the $1k you're willing to spend. I know of a reputable breeder who is selling a 7 month old female Yorkie that weighs about a little bit over 2 lbs, but she's in Ohio. And I'm not sure what the price is. She won't ship, so you'd have to fly over there to pick her up. |

It is my assumption that you would not be breeding this dog if it were a female and maybe so for a male. If that is the case, for a female, it is highly possible to purchase a female yorkie, that is unregistered here in WA for under $1,000. I have actually seen breeders go as low as $700 for a female that is not registered. Registered AKC males usually go for $800-1,000 and registered females starting at $1,200 - $3,500. Just a thought. |

You can buy "yorkies" for under $1000. here in CA too. Especially unregistered ones. The problem is Backyard breeders don't care about the breed standard and don't have the knowledge it takes to breed for health and temperment. It's very risky to buy from that type of breeder. Always sad when members on here are disappointed when their Yorkie doesn't look like a Yorkie. We need to encourage good breeding practices for these wonderful dogs. |
Have you considered making the drive to the Phoenix area? I realize its 5 or so hours, but I am sure you could find one there well in your price range. Welcome to YorkieTalk :) Glad you found us. |

Really? I'd definitely be willing to drive to Phoenix if I can find a yorkie that I am looking for within my price range. Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm glad that I found you~ :) |
By the way, does anyone here know about Posh Puppy? http://www.poshpuppy.info/Home.do;js...5C958BEE4DCA79 I saw its website & it's not too far away from where I live. They are selling from $1200 to $1800. Reasonable? Thanks a lot. :) |

Doo Doo I pm'd you. I also was wanting to ask a question, what is a back yard breeder? Does one have to have a kennel license to be considered a good breeder? When we first started looking I visited several homes that had yorkies and was breeding but they weren't kennel licensed, so would they be considered back yard breeders? We are also looking to get a small female playmate for Baby Blessing. Thanks, Patti |

Understanding Breeders The first step in finding a pup is understanding the types of breeding practices going on. Then you can compare Apples to Apples and Apples to Oranges. You can also decide (before seeing puppies...since they are ALL little and cute) what breeding practices you want to support. Some people feel that once the puppy has been produced there is no "damage" done in buying from a petstore, puppymill, backyard breeder or commercial breeder. Just remember when you buy a pup you are encouraging a practice to continue. The "damage" of petstores is most continue supporting puppymills. The damage of puppymills is they mistreat their dogs. The damage of backyard breeders is they produce poor quality dogs and owners are often disappointed with their adult dogs. (remember, all puppies are cute) The damage continues when these poor quality dogs are sold and more poor quality dogs breed and make even poorer quality. Most backyard breeders don't know about the lines their dogs came from and health problems are bred over and over too. Some people don't see a problem with commercial kennels but I would never support that kind of treatment of these little dogs. Imagine our dogs who crave human contact living in a kennel environment surrounded by 20 other kennels? Buy from them and their business continues. Learn this stuff first. Keep doing research and save your money for a pet you won't be disappointed in. The difficult part is finding a breeder so learn what kind of breeder you want to find! http://www.shilohshepherds.com/puppy...erMatrixv4.htm |

Thank you~ I'll keep both of you updated on my progress of finding a yorkie to love. :aimeeyork |
Guys~ I finally found my little yorkie yesterday. His name is Haru~ Haru is a 10 weeks old black/gold boy and weights around 1 3/4 lbs now. (I'll post some pictures of him when I get my camera charged) He's just sooooo~ adorable!!!!!!!! I love him so much. He's also sweet, playful, smart, eating well, & most importantly, healthy..... :) (hopefully he'll stay healthy as he is right now) I found him through breeders.net (however, it's more like a agent in stead of a breeder) I paid $1400 for him. The price is not as cheap as i would want it to be, but i think it's alright comparing to many other places that i'd gone to. BIG BIG thanks to everyone here who has helped me. You guys are fantastic~ |
Congratulations! Did you get to see his parents? We need pictures!!! |
I am pretty sure that you don't get to see the parents from that site. But I could be wrong. |
Congratulations! I am so happy for you. Hopefully you will post pics soon.:) |
Thank you~ thank you~ thanks for the congrats :D No, unfortunately, I didn't see his parents. Now you are reminding me this by bringing it up. Lola LaRue, You told me something about a pet insurance. So what is it? What does it cover? Which company's pet health planning you chose for cute Lola? My HaRu has a 1 year health guarantee, finished 2 shots & deworms, the vet he went to covers the next shot that is dued in 2 weeks. As what I was told by the seller, I only need to take him to 1 other shot. Do you think I would need a pet insurance? o~ I was charging my digital camera, & it was kind of wierd that it seems to take FOREVER to charge it..... then I found out that the digi cam looks like it's broken (haven't used it for ages!) I'll show all of you HaRu's pix as soon as I get a digi cam! Thank you all again...cuz if it wasn't all of you, i wouldn't have enough knowledge to pick HaRu out of those many places I went. (however, it stills seems there are hella alot out there to learn~ ) YT ROCKS! |
o~ also, HaRu is microchipped....I don't know...it just seemsto me that it's making the whole thing better and safer .. |

Congratulations to you and Haru. BTW... How did you come up with the name? |

Jazzie has an exclusion on her coverage since she had allergies BEFORE I enrolled her. Jazzie is 8 years old and her premium just went up due to her age but still it's only $34.00 a month. I highly recommend it. I sure don't want your babies having to really need it but you never know if you would be faced with a unexpected accident or illness like we did with Jewel. |
For the rest of you in So Cal looking for a puppy: 1. There is an organized Yorkie Get Together at Fashion Island on June 9th at 7:00 pm. It is hosted by Muttropolis. It may be a good place to meet breeders and other owners to get info. Not to mention it should be a blast. 2. Try www.shooterdog.com the guy who runs the site is really in tune with quality So Cal breeders including a breeder who is also a AKC Yorkie Judge. PS: Fashion Island is a Dog Friendly Mall and most stores including the department stores allows ALL dogs in their stores. I saw several large breeds shopping at Neimans! It was an amazing & surreal experience to just walk into stores with Jazzie. |
