Our Blu is black with a silky coat. She was 11 months old in this picture. She is now almost 13 months old going through her first heat cycle. We also have other blacks............ Dinky and Sassy. Sassy is the mother to both Dinky and Blu, different litters, same sire who also produces very light silver-blue. And Feebie pictured with one of her babies.

Matty's coloring is not a fault. She is breaking on her back now and I think she will be a beautiful, dark steel blue. I am happy that she is taking longer for her red/gold to change. She will hold her color much longer than a lot of Yorkies. Matty has a gorgeous pedigree, her father is a champion as an example, and her "cousin", who looks a lot like Matty and has the same coloring, took 1st in the puppy class 6-9 months, at the Red Bow Specialty in Chicago last week. I consider Matty to be a fine example of the breed and this is JMO - not out to start a fight or anything.

That's Sassy, the mom to Dinky and Blu, oh yeah, and Peanut. She was Reggie's very first born...........on my foot as I worked on the computer. She sure makes beautiful babies.

Does she consistently throw the darker ones?

She and Gizmo have had a mix, some are very light, like Gizmo and others are dark, and the littler of four she had in 2005 was all dark, including their heads. Dinky's color never changed from the time he was born and the other three in the litter also stayed with very dark heads. She will be seven the end of November and her baby days are done, although I might let her have one more litter with Buddy. I'll decide for sure when she comes in heat. Not only that, our main studman, Gizmo, had a kidney stone in July and it happened to be lodged behind his scrotum and had to be neutered in order to get to it. Giz and Sassy made the most beautiful puppies.

We have kept several of Gizmo's female pups, Roxie (from Sissy-from Reggie/Tucker), Peanut and Blu (from Sassy-from Reggie/Tucker), Little Regi and Star (from Reggie) and one male, Dinky (from Sassy). Roxie is silver blue/gold. In the summer her back turns blond with blue tips. Little Regi is dark blue/tan, Peanut is mostly light blue including her head with just a bit of tan mixed into her head with light tan legs. Star is mostly medium/dark blue all over with light tan legs. The biggest difference with Peanut and Star is the hair on their ears. Peanuts is light and Star's is very dark silver/blue like her back. Blu is colored like Sassy, black back, dark tan head. And then there is Dinky, black as the ace of spades, including his head and ears. The only tan on him is his legs and 2 thin stipes going down his back end. Until I cut his hair in puppy cut, he looked ALL black. Lots of pictures on website, garlinyorkies.info.

I have one male available from Dinky/Feebie with black back and his head is turning silver. He's 5 months old and is only going to be around 3.5 pounds. And Roxie's little boy Joey with Buddy looks like he's going to stay with the dark head more like Dinky. Not sure on his adult size as four years old, this is only Roxie's second litter. He's just shy of 11 weeks old and weighs 1.9 pounds........all little round belly!

our male is 3.5lbs and our female is 6lbs. both are black and gold, no silver. there are times though that one of our pups out of each litter will get silver on their heads. they all have been 4lbs and under. we have been breeding for 10 years, but we are more of a hobby breeder. we don't have a bunch of yorkies. we have 1 male and 2 females. the one female we retired in april because she is only 4lbs. we get $800-$1000 for our females and $600-$800 for our males.

Actually they weren't all much bigger. In fact when shows first started they were divided by weight, over 5 pounds and under 5 pounds. The biggest problem with breeding them so far down in size is that alot of times they are smaller for a reason and we have now bred in liver shunt and other issues as well.

Not always - all three of my blacks have true silky coats and are the easiest off all my dogs to keep brushed - could it be this great Florida weather that does that :D:D No of course not - this humidity this year is killing me and the dogs .!!!!! I am about to either retire or take the kids and move back north somewhere away from these storms and the heat.

Liver shunts has nothing to do with breeding them down in size. It can occur in any size dog, it's just more common in yorkies than other breeds.

It's not about size, it's about looking at one trait when breeding and not considering why that trait is there. When you hold back all the tiny males to breed because you want smaller pups you have to investigate why the dog is so small. One of the first indications of liver shunt is growth problems. A friend of mine who is a microbiologist is working with Dr. Center on LS and you'd be surprised what they are finding when they look at lines where people have been linebreeding with decreasing size in mind.

My point is that liver shunts can occur in yorkies of any size, and also in other breeds. My vet attended a conference on liver shunts. Yorkies are 1200 times more likely to be born with liver shunts. It is much more the case of the breed rather than the decreased size of the pups due to linebreeding. Of course, you point is well taken that linebreeding may increase the odds of liver shunts and in that case, breeding of that line should be discontinued.

I am not trying to breed small Yorkies. I agree that as soon as something is found wrong in anybreed that line should be stopped. Everyone should be trying to improve the breed not add to any faults. I just don't understand why the darker colours are so frowned upon.
If there is any major reasons I don't know I hope someone will tell me before I buy one!

The darker colors aren't frowned upon, in fact they are quite popular in the ring right now. Darker and Off are too different things. A yorkie should be blue and not black though it may take up to three years for their adult blue to come in. My Denali is dark, her mother is a redleg. She was bred to bring pigment in my line that will hold as the dogs age. A black dog is actually incorrect in the color genes and can pass on an incorrect gene to it's children. Correct color in the yorkie isn't easy to breed for so show breeders are very careful to keep incorrect color out of their breeding program. Here's a pic of Denali, she's a very dark blue at 17 months and hasn't cleared on her head yet.
