Showing your yorkie I was just wanting to know, what are the rules if you want to have your yorkie enter one of the shows I see on tv all the time, I mean do they have to be certain colors, height, weight does their hair have to be long cause I never see one with short hair like my Charlie. I am just curious I think Charlie could win (a mothers love talking of course :luvu:) LOL Mary and Charlie |

Having said that, sometimes there are annual Pet Fairs that run a fun competition, where you can take your family pet in for judging. Local community papers are usually a good source of information on these type of events. There are also other types of events, often times called performance sports, that are a blast to do with your dog. You have your traditional obedience competitions, rally, agility, flyball, dock diving, weight pull ( one day I just might try that out with a Yorkie lol lol) field trials, rescue work. So many opportunities to have fun with your Yorkie. Some of these events are run by AKC, others by UKC, and some by special clubs. Hope this answers your question. |
Thank you Thank you so much for your reply. I wasnt really thinking of entering my Charlie just wondered what the criteria was. Charlie has a mind of his own if he wants to play and do a trick its fine and dandy but if he dont................ well lets just say there no getting him to budge. LOL I can just see it now .. we are up to do the run at the show and he lays down and wants a belly rub oh yeah THATS my Charlie hahahahaha |
You should attend some shows in your area. Here are a couple of links to find shows and information. Good place to start learning. InfoDog AKC Dog Show Information - Main Menu Jack Onofrio Dog Shows, LLC |
What are the collars/leashes they use in shows...well the leash and collars, they look different than any I've seen in pet boutiques, stores online and I asked the local pet store lady she said they were all of a certain brand and she didn't know how to get them...anyone know the brand or where to get them? Is it a collar leash combo or one unit? She was under the impression it was specialty one unit piece... Yes, I'm asking for specifically the ones used for Yorkies :o) |
As with anything there are a variety of collar/lead combos used in the show ring. In the toy rings you will usually see rescos or what I've always been told are "kind collars", these collars have a wider chin/neck support to prevent tension on the trachea. Here are a couple of links selection of collars - Show Leads & Collars | PetEdge.com kind collar - The 3c's Dog Show and Grooming Supplies Teresa |
Actually, most have their leads custom made with different neck pieces according to which works best for your dog and at lengths that work best for the handler...and at times, a little "bling". |

Thank you all so much! I have always wondered about what kind they were and then later why leashes and collars on Yorkies in dog shows...good to know that also many people have their custom made...we're not quite going that far. To be totally honest we're building an agility course in the spring for our dogs, adn the Christmas tree platform we built this year has turned into my son's stage for his pretend dog shows...it's more of a fun thing to get the kids more into activities with the dogs, but I've also been very curious about it! Thank you all for your responses! |
