Coat Oil
 

I have not kept a show coat in 7 years. I used Royal Coatilin and Hagen oil from GB.
Old habits die hard..please tell me what coat oils any of you use now? If you do not wrap what do you do use? I do perfer wrapping and will use a light dressing, then wrappers. I have not paid much attention to what people are using today at shows.
I bought a Show grooming tape from SweetBlue and they use Silk Texture Shampoo/conditioner, Liquid Silk after drying and top knot gel..
I do like Plush Puppy products and Vellus.

I would be happy to send the tape to anyone and then they could send it on to another member if interested. No use it sitting here gathering dust..I am not saying I know everything, but not much on the tape I didn't know...good refresher course.

Pat, I would love to borrow the tape, since I haven't shown and grown a coat full length in a while. I use to use Skin So Soft from Avon in their rinse water - 1 tablespoon. And just wash over thsir coats. I tried wrapes before but almost ruined Foxfire's coat. He was not use to wrapes and when I came home from work - he had pulled some wrapes out with his long coat. I was in tears - so I don;t wrape, but did have floor length coats.
I tried using the Skin So Soft again, but it is so strong of a smell now - I just think it is too strong for my babies. I am now just using mineral oli in the rinse water and it is working great! No mats - and great coat growth. I will try what others are doing since I am still a new novice - revisted. Thanks Pat.

Plush Puppy is next on my list to try. I like Nova Pearls and pet silk oil. I keep mine in a light bit of oil. No wrapping, he rips them out no matter what I do.

If I can share? I don't show of course.....don't wrap Chanel & don't even know how to wrap......but I DO have Liquid Silk and I also have Plush Puppy Sea Breeze Oil....

the Liquid Silk is MUCH Lighter - the Sea Breeze is a heavy oil and I noticed it's too much if you spray directly on and they will look greasy....I rub it on my hands and even on Chanels dry hair - you can see the oil...I use it because it's susposed to prevent breakage.

So many ideas, so little time!! LOL Does anyone use cotton "booties" to prevent coat damage? I always used them on the back feet. Really no different then a person hearing socks. I have no ring showing talents, but I can grow a show coat on a Yorkie.

I have noticed you do not have to have a Yorkie dripping in coat to win here in Florida. Maybe Judges are are more laid back..hope so! I want to enjoy Kate and not freak out each time she acts like a dog and rolls around on the patio concrete...I hope I can do it..!

I use cotton booties for Gazou and Heidi . This is great .

Yes, I will have to start putting the booties on Pepe, since he is wanting to use his back legs to itch out his topknot. I don't have the topknot in bands of course at home - donlt eant the breakage, but I use the small scrungies and he hates to have his hair up. I am trying to keep his hair out of his eyes so they don't tear or get infected. I am also making sure it is not too tight. But still he wants to scratched it out. What to do???? :confused:
Don't use too much oil - it is not good for the skin and will cause problems. The skin still needs to breath. I tried one oil - for dogs and caused like a layer of wax to form on the skin. It was really bad. I only used it once and was the last time. I will have to look it up and tell you guys so you don't use it. :eek:

You are so right about oil..go lightly. I do not put it on the skin, only the hair as I wrap. Oil on the ears will clog the pores and cause leather ear..a dog in oil is very prone to chilling I have found.

So, where can you order this magic stuff? I would love to get some oil and try it...

I don't show, but I do keep my girls in long coats.

A friend that does show, says she no longer uses oil or needs to wrap, since using Laser Lites, Mattless.

I would also LOVE to find out what the magic trick is, i have tried coco butter but it just didnt do it for Chanel her coat is SO dry :confused:

There are so many oil products that works well. I have never oiled a pet coat, saw no need...oil can have the opposite effect and actual dry out the skin, so be cautious.
I have never heard of this Laser Lites..sounds interesting. I will look for it.
Liquid Silk is very nice...I am used to a spray on light oil and like I said , so many to try.
I did like Vellus Tangle Out..mats are not a problem for me, but how can you get length without wrapping? I will have to compete with Marie (Parkside) down here and hers are dripping in coat. LOL

I have explained what I use to take care of the coat... but use other things before show and at ringside.

I use Plush Puppy Natural Conditioning Shampoo with Evening Primrose
And Plush Puppy Natural Silk Protein Conditioner

I wash my yorkie with the shampoo, rinse really well and then use the conditioner. I follow Plush Puppies intructions as far as the mixing for these products.

Then I use Neutrogena with light sesame formula. I mix one capful of the Neutrogena to a eight ounce glass of water... and then pour it over the dog making sure not to get it on its ears. Once I have did this I don't rinse it off the dog. I then wrap in a towel and head for the grooming table.

Many people are not aware of this but thought I would share this with you.. Once the dog is in oil it is a MUST to make sure the hair is dry before wrapping the coat... if it isn't dry and you wrap it I will promiss you that your coat will rot in the wraps.

I also use booties. I make them myself. I use fleece. Red, Blue any fun color. I cut the fleece into rectangles. Oh about five inches long by three inches wide. Then I fold it in half and sew the edges. Once I have sewed it I then turn it right side to. When I put them on the dogs rear feet I brush all the hair on the dogs leg towards its body and then slide the bootie on. I then use electrical tape and wrap it around the leg making sure it is not to tight. I like to use the electrical tape because it stretches and it is cheap. LOL

I have never had skin problems using the Neutrogena.

I don't show, but I just love the show coat. I've just started to wrap Mimi's hair, and let me tell you I have seen a great difference in her coat. It seems that the coat grows faster when you wrap it. I really don't have any experience other than reading and getting tips from web-sites. So this is really a great post and I have still alot to learn. The one thing that I haven't done yet is use the booties and what a great idea to make your own, thanks for the explanation. Does anybody buy them? If so where? I also use the Nutragena, but I rub it on my hands then run them thru her coat.It really does leave it nice and soft.
I still have a problem with wrapping the hairs on her face, they're not that long. Any suggestions?
